Extreme Makeover: Walswick Family
'Daddy's in angel's clothes. He has wings', says four-year old Bridget Walswick whose Dad Greg recently passed away. Meet the inspirational Martha Walswick and her nine children, who have outgrown their small, shabby home. A word of caution, you'll need waterproof mascara for this episode.
Martha Walswick, a plump matronly figure with a heart of gold, was devastated when her husband lost his three-year battle with brain cancer. Both pillars of the community, Greg would happily give up his weekends to help out neighbours and Martha, bless her, thinks nothing of baking thirty-five pies for Thanksgiving.
Their house is simply inadequate. Four girls share one bedroom and the two younger boys double up in a bedroom in the hallway which all the family walk through. The kitchen is tiny and Martha's room doubles as a storage facility. And it's been completely neglected for the past three years during Greg's illness. In the words of Ty it needs 'some lovin'.
The stretch limo whisks a tearful Walswick family away to Palm Springs. Meanwhile our team embark on a total demolition, and it really is total with not a window or door left standing. The number one priority is creating a big kitchen which will be the hub of the family home, and number two, extending the floor space to build more childrens' bedrooms.
The radical transformation gets underway and in the two older girls' bedroom a retractable glass wall is built to separate tiger print kitsch from citrus flower power. The two youngest girls will be in ballet heaven with their pink dance studio bedroom with mirrored wall and bar. And the boys' bedroom is entirely constructed from snowboards, even the bed!
A jacuzzi ensuite and walk-in wardrobe extend the master bedroom to create a secluded idyll for Martha, and Michael describes the kitchen with its eight-burner stove and three ovens as 'a dream'. It even has self-cleaning windows (we want). For the kids there's a new games room containing 'every game on the planet' and Greg's special rocking chair with brand new slipcover sewn by Martha's sewing circle.
Outside an oak tree representing Greg's life is planted alongside the new stone pathway. The smart porch houses a solarium and barbeque area and in the back yard a tree house with its own outdoor theatre - just see the the kids' jaws drop!
Other must-see moments include the unveiling ceremony of the 'tree of love', an installation of family photos and candles, which will have you either cringing or crying (probably cringing). It's feel-good telly which will have you punching the air and shouting 'alriiiight' at the TV... maybe.
