Extreme Makeover: Woslum Family
Meet the five-strong Woslum family. On Valentine's Day, just two months after they moved into their new family home, Dad Trent was sent to Iraq (pronounced Eye-rack) for a tour of duty. With a full-time job and three sons, mum Donna has precious little time for decoration.
The house is a sorry affair indeed, utterly lacking in colour, personality and direction. The dining chairs are actually plastic garden furniture. Suffice to say if this house was a dog, you'd put it out of its misery.
So mum and boys are whisked away to Disneyland and several high-fives later our team sets to work. But there's a surprise in store. Unbeknown to the team Ty has recruited an extra pair of hands. Enter Trent, returned from Eye-rack! It's a genuinely lovely moment and we guarantee your mascara will be running.
The team decide on a Spanish hacienda style for the house, with a Mediterranean-inspired front garden. And in the back garden, for the baseball-mad trio of sons there's a scale replica of the LA Dodgers pitch.
Upstairs, youngest son Alex's bedroom becomes a turreted castle with pull-down drawbridge bed. Middle son Nicholas will now be sleeping in a funky silver spaceship with padded walls, and Steven's bedroom goes orange with a high-impact high-tech theme. Check out the kids' bathroom with its ingenious carwash-style shower complete with soap and suds cycle. And downstairs the living area morphs into show home chic. An autumnal palette of terracottas and golds flows seamlessly throughout the new family room, living room and kitchen. It's pretty darn impressive.
And does the whole thing run smoothly? Er no. Preston seems to thrive on winding Constance up. It's his refusal to commit plans to paper that makes her see red, and for his part, he just can't accept that any of her ideas have merit. It's deliciously bitchy and you can tell that there's real tension behind those gritted smiles.
There are a couple of truly great moments in this episode. Look out for Trent driving back with the new sofa. He breaks hard, there's a shattering of glass and the sofa flies out of the back window of the van. Class telly. And just see Michael's reaction when he's ticked off for ripping down a lamppost without approval. Superb.
Needless to say Mum and boys are thrilled with the transformation. But the icing on the cake is the arrival of Dad, who the family hasn't seen for ten months. Believe us, there won't be a dry eye in the house.
