Determined to keep the family together at all costs the eldest children have assumed legal guardianship of their siblings. The family's raw emotion is evident, but the support from neighbours, friends and of course the design team is an inspiration.

Living conditions in the 1400ft² Cadigan-Scott home come close to squalor. Beds are randomly arranged wherever there's floor space and two children sleep in the garage. The kitchen is so dilapidated it's a health hazard and all eight children share one tiny bathroom. The one room which isn't used is the parents' bedroom which remains unchanged since the parents died.

With the children en route to a dream holiday at Disneyworld presenter Ty declares 'two words, big change'. Cue the demolition. Every room in the house will either be ripped out or extended, and all in seven days. But the team hit a snag. The massive $1m budget is soon swallowed up and the team need to raise cash fast. Of course, a charity gig! In no time at all Ty is up on stage with the design team on backing vocals and kerching, the cash comes rolling in.

Meanwhile, a massive 1,000ft² is added to the house giving each child their own room. The vast kitchen with its year's supply of pizza is perfect for the family to hang out or watch one of the eight screens on the TV wall. Two showers, seven sinks and a whirlpool are installed in the impressive bathroom and outside a swimming pool and miniature golf course are installed.

Reminders of the parents are evident at every turn. A skylight featuring two doves is horribly naff but the two giant redwoods are indeed a beautiful touch.

The family return home to find 3,000 wellwishers lining the streets. To say they're overwhelmed is an understatement. Keep your finger on the volume control because the girls' screaming reaches fever pitch! And don't miss the icing on the cake: the burning of the mortgage deeds is a truly lovely moment.

God bless America for such unmissable telly.
