Colour co-ordination
Jen Cooper runs Colours 4 Life and believes that wearing the right colours remains a vital part of looking good. "After a consultation, I'll be able to give people a selection of 30 or 40 colours that they should wear. But this doesn't mean they can't wear other colours - in fact they can wear a quarter of all the colours in the world, which is literally millions - but their 'core colours' are the ones they should aim for. They should try to choose colours that are as close to those as possible".
Jen's consultations last for at least 2 hours and cost £75. Adding a body image consultation will cost £140 and Jen says most people end up spending the whole day with her.
Who should try it?
So what kinds of people want this advice? "Literally - everybody. Youngsters who are looking for work, young mums, working women - and men, even retired people," says Jen. We are all, it seems, in need of a bit of style advice.
The House of Colour runs a nationwide business. A successful image consultation often signals a new direction in their clients' personal lives. "Some people come to us for a bit of fun, but many people come after some kind of life-changing experience - divorce or losing a job. It gives them a boost," they say.
Sessions are run in groups of 3 or 4 people. The aim is to provide a supportive environment and enable clients to see how the process works on others. A colour analysis class costs £85 and will last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours.
Dress to impress
So, once you've worked out what colours really suit you, are your colour worries finally over? Apparently not. Recent research suggests the colours we wear affect how we are judged by others. Red, the colour of aggression, allows you to be taken more seriously. Yellow or orange can help you come across as more friendly and approachable. Pink, on the other hand, is flirtatious and blue is supposed to be the colour of trustworthiness.
All of which sounds interesting, but makes getting dressed in the morning even more of a nightmare. However, don't fall into the trap of sticking to basic black - even if it does match almost everything else in your wardrobe!
