Decorating Adjoining Bathrooms
When faced with decorating a bathroom and separate toilet, should you decorate them the same way? Donna Hardie has some recommendations...
Dear Donna,
I have a large bathroom and a fairly large toilet room with a loo, wash basin and freestanding cupboard. The rooms are next to each other. I would like your opinion on whether I should decorate them the same or not? They both have windows and are quite bright. The bathroom suite is white and has a roll-top bath and a shower in the corner. There are no tiles on the walls in either room.
Thanks,
Lin

Dear Lin,
As the rooms are adjoining, I would definitely go for a similar colour scheme, primarily to provide continuity between the two bathroom areas in your home. But you can give the smaller room some quirky touches that would be too overpowering in the larger of the two spaces.
Blue makes a splash in bathrooms this season, so paint the main room in a tranquil, cool shade of sky blue - just one or two walls if the idea of a one colour room is overwhelming, and add complimentary shades of baby blue, turquoise and aqua in the form of towels, glassware and even mosaic tiles if you want to add a few splashback areas behind the sink and the bath.
Maintain this airy, elemental theme by laying slate tiles on the floor (or slate effect vinyl if you want something warmer underfoot), adding freestanding pale beech furniture, and hanging either whitewashed wooden shutters at the window or a simple white voile that lets light flood into the room.
In the smaller room, stick to the same colours on the wall, but instead, what about having a bit of fun and instead of using slate on the floor, you could lay vinyl tiles with photo-real pebbles printed onto them. You're still maintaining continuity as they're in keeping with the colour of the slate tiles next door. A company called Harvey Maria sells a pack of 11 tiles (covers approx 1 sq metre or 1.2 square yards) for £39.95. To request a brochure call (020) 8542 0088 or log onto their website to order the tiles online. You could also add a funky pebble design loo seat to match the floor and hang black and white beach scene pictures in both rooms for the finishing touches.
Happy decorating!
