Paint for Exterior Walls

Buying cheap paint for exterior walls is a false economy, says Homes and Property expert Donna Hardie. Read on to find out how to buy the right paint to achieve a great exterior finish.

Dear Donna,

The paint on my outside walls is flaking and looking very shabby, but before I give it a fresh coat please could you tell me: what is the best type of paint to use?

Thanks!

Hi,

If you're planning to paint the outside of your house in the coming weeks or months, with Britain's weather becoming increasingly unpredictable, it makes sense to use a paint product that can cope with more extreme weather conditions. The experts from The Paint Quality Institute say that top quality acrylic paints can protect and look good for longer than ordinary paints.

Firstly, it's essential to use paints designed specifically for exteriors they've been formulated to withstand the onslaught of the elements far better. Secondly and more importantly, choosing a cheaper, exterior paint is often a false saving, it will crack and blister more quickly. Exterior water-based acrylics provide better colour retention than ordinary paints, as well as being more resistant to blistering and peeling. They also offer superior dirt pick-up resistance, meaning that the façade stays looking cleaner for longer.

First, use a wire brush to remove loose material and loose and flaking paint. Clean the surface with detergent and water then rinse thoroughly. If mould is present, use a bleach solution in a ratio of 3:1 water to bleach, again rinsing thoroughly with water afterwards. Allow the surface to dry completely. If the surface is chalky, treat with a water-based sealer in order to create an even and clean surface for the top coat. Apply a good quality water-based acrylic paint suitable for exteriors and work from the top down. Take care to work paint into uneven surfaces. And don't be tempted to use an interior brush for outdoor painting. Use a masonry brush that's 10cm to 15cm (3.9in x 5.9in) across or a long pile masonry roller.

Hope that helps!

Donna
