Choosing a Dressing Table

The perfect surface for a mirror, make up, jewellery, keys and that early morning cup of tea, the dressing table really is a bedroom must-have. Debbie investigates dressers to impress.

Hi Debbie,

I've just moved in to a new flat and I'm looking for a dressing table for my bedroom. I really want one that I can sit at, with a mirror, something quite feminine, preferably white. The room is fairly minimalist with bare floorboards and a wrought iron bed.

Not sure where to start looking. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Emma

Dear Emma,

If you're a fan of Swedish style and have a healthy budget, log onto Nordic Style. Their Carl Larsson collection is pretty. The dressing table is £1020 (main picture) and the mirror is £330. Also available are a matching bedside table and chest of drawers. Add filmy white curtains to complete the look. View the collections online at Nordic Style and order by phone on (020) 7351 1755.

If you want something a little more traditional, take a look at OKA. They do a couple of dressing tables in a painted finish that would do well in your new bedroom. The Beauvais (pictured right, £440) comes in either dove grey or buttermilk and comes with a matching mirror (£85). Alternatively their simple Dressing Table/Desk (ref: EK196) is simple but attractive. It costs £312 and comes as part of a range of bedroom furniture which includes bedside tables, lamps and occasional tables. Buy online at OKA or telephone (0870) 160 6002.

If it was my bedroom I'd probably go for something a bit more minimalist. I would be tempted to go for something really cool and simple, like a glass top on a pair of trestles. Habitat sell various trestle combinations in either beech or metal. Nic is a powder coated metal trestle that costs £40 per trestle, whereas Web is made of chromed wire and costs £59 per trestle. Notaire comes in solid oiled beech and costs £99 per pair. They sell a plain glass top called Lagon which comes in three sizes: 140cm x 80cm (£120), 180cm x 80cm (£150) and 200cm x 90cm (£180). Team this with Habitat's triple mirror in beech (£39, ref. SK0955725).

If you need a chair, the perfect accompaniment is the Louis Ghost chair (£127) from Purves & Purves. Complete the look with Perspex storage boxes, available from Muji. Their cosmetic box (ref. 147983) features two drawers and a separate compartment with a lid and costs £7.50. Available instore or online at Muji.

Another contemporary alternative is Bo Concept's modern dressing table in beech (£393) with matching beech shelf (£49) and mirror (£69). See all their products online at Bo Concept or call (0845) 605 0565 for details of your nearest store.

Best wishes,

Debbie
