High Gloss Finish

Getting a shiny new looking kitchen doesn't always involve forking out on top of the range appliances. If you've got a bit of time, plenty of patience and a tin of paint, you can put some dazzle back into your lacklustre cabinets.

Dear Donna,

I have got MDF kitchen cabinets and wanted to have them spray painted or spray paint them myself to give them the high gloss varnish/lacquer veneer of the expensive modern kitchens now so popular. Do you know if I could do this myself or of any places that could do this for me around London? I would really appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

Hi Butternut,

If you have a couple of days to spare over a weekend, you can achieve the high gloss finish you're after yourself by painting over your old doors using International's Melamine Primer and Japlac.

Convenient and extremely easy to use, low odour Melamine Primer gives you a quality basecoat that ensures smooth and long lasting adhesion of the topcoat. Japlac is available in 12 shades, including white, and provides a high gloss finish on melamine surfaces. Here's how to get it right.

1. Clean the surface completely, removing all traces of grease and other contaminants. Sugar soap can be used to lift off dirt and grease. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying Melamine Primer.

2. Stir the paint well before use to ensure an even finish and good coverage. Make sure the room you're working in is well ventilated and is as free from dust as possible. Using a synthetic brush, apply an even coat of Melamine Primer and leave to dry for four hours.

3. Once dry, sand the surface very lightly to remove any brush marks, then dust clean with a dry cloth.

4. Using a natural bristle brush, apply the Japlac. Paint the entire surface with up and down strokes for a smooth even coat. Leave to dry for six hours.

5. Again, once dry, sand the surface lightly to remove any runs or drips and then dust clean with a dry cloth.

6. Apply a second coat of Japlac and leave for six hours to dry thoroughly.

7. Clean brushes after use with proprietary cleaner.

Melamine Primer costs £8.99 for 750ml and Japlac in Arctic White costs £8.15 for 500ml from International Paints (01480) 484 284.

Enjoy the results!

Donna.
