Chinese New Year Decorations
If you enjoy cooking and serving Chinese food, why not go the whole hog and decorate your dining room with an Oriental theme? With all its fabulous festivities and decorations, Chinese New Year is the perfect time to give it a try.
Dear Donna,
I'd love to create an Oriental theme for a dinner party I'm having to celebrate Chinese New Year. Where do I start?
Cheers,
Alex.

Hi Alex,
What a brilliant idea for a January dinner party! Not only is it timed to coincide with the Chinese New Year but it's also a colourful theme that will brighten up a truly gloomy month.
Before you do anything, check out your local Chinese supermarket for inspiration. There you'll find lots of authentic decorating ideas to create an Oriental ambience.
Set the scene with Chinatown-inspired paper lanterns strung over and along the table and make paper dragons and Chinese motif candles a central feature along the centre. If you have a good florist nearby, buy a stem of apple blossom or a single orchid and display in a simple glass vase. Bamboo is another good option if you prefer something that you can use all year round. Alternatively, float some red candles in a bowl, complimented by a few exotic flowers. Finally, burn some Jasmine incense in the room.
As the colour red signifies good luck around Chinese New Year, add touches of this dramatic colour into your table setting with a red silk table runner and red cloth napkins. Banish knives and forks for the evening and make chopsticks compulsory.
When it comes to food presentation, place your wok in a prime position on the table and serve from there. If you're looking to invest in a wok, take a look at Sensai, the latest range of cookware inspired by Ken Hom comprising of a wok, stir-fry pan, stockpot with integral noodle strainer, grill pan and fry pan. Made from lightweight cast aluminium, its excellent heat conducting properties ensure that the heat is distributed evenly while cooking. Priced from £43, it's available from major department stores or by calling (0870) 160 1319.
For a fun end to the evening, finish off the meal with a traditional fortune cookie for all your guests. That's sure to kick off lively after dinner chats.
