Melissa Porter Interview

Presenter of Put Your Money Where Your House Is, Melissa Porter may be new to UK Style, but she's certainly no stranger to the homes and property market. And in this new 15-part exclusive, she'll be showing homeowners how to ensure that the value of their property continues to increase, even in a volatile market. We caught up with Melissa to find out all about her, and what it was like on the set of the show...

You have an honours degree in Retail Marketing. How did you get into television presenting?
"When I was a brand manager or marketing manager for various companies, I had to do lots of presentations. One week when I was on a teambuilding course we were doing some presenting exercises and a few people said to me 'why don't you try presenting?'. I thought, 'That could be interesting - let's try it!'. So I put together a rough showreel, a biography and some photos and sent it out to loads of different production and television companies. I got a call back from Granada to do a motoring programme for them. That was my first break, on Granada's Men and Motors."

What do you like about television presenting?
"I really enjoy the fact that you do something different every day. I love meeting all sorts of people and this job allows that."

According to your biography, you're also a "professional relocator" - what does a professional relocator do?
"Well, I'm not sure if I'm a professional, but I'm a relocator! I worked for a relocation company in Knightsbridge. Basically, being a relocator is all about moving people from one country to a different country or a different location and help them to find schools, jobs, houses and a social life."

Have you always been interested in homes and interiors?
"I love property! Whilst I was a child till the age of about 25 when I left home, we lived in about 30 different houses! My dad was completely passionate about property and I think it rubbed off on me. So I'm a bit of a gypsy!"

If people only do one thing to add value to their home, what do you think it should be?
"Paint it cream!"
