Meet Paul Martin
Paul Martin is known to most of us as the enthusiastic presenter of Flog It! However, he's had quite a varied career path leading up to presenting the popular show, plus he's a man with varied, and sometimes surprising, interests!
Paul was artistic from an early age and studied art and woodwork at Falmouth College in Cornwall. Following his graduation, he spent two years as a scenic painter on film sets at Pinewood Studios and then, from the age of 25, owned a pitch on London's famous Portobello Road.
He then went on to work as an antiques props stylist for magazines like Marie Claire and New Woman, whilst also undertaking larger projects by designing antique sets for television shoots for The Clothes Show and Granada TV.
But he does have a few more contemporary artistic bows to his arrow too - back in the early 90's, Paul spent some time playing as a session musician in rock bands like The Choir Boys and the Dogs D'Amour. To this day, he can't put those drumsticks down and can often be found playing in local jazz and blues bands.
Paul's a regular renaissance man - his primary passion is studying and restoring antique country furniture but he also enjoys still life drawing. And if that weren't enough to keep the average person busy round the clock, Paul, aged 41, also runs an antiques shop, The Table Gallery, in Marlborough in Wiltshire, specialising in 17th and 18th century Welsh and English oak furniture.
Plus several times a month, he goes in search of primitive furniture along the entire length and breadth of Wales. Wales has a special place in Paul's heart. He adores Celtic culture and the traditional values of the Welsh people, which he tries to incorporate into his shop. The scenery, too, provides the perfect haven for a spot of fishing - particularly on Lake Balla in Snowdonia - and walking his German Shepherd, Bluebell.
If you fancy yourself as a bit of an able antiques-spotter, then how about visiting some auction houses? Find out where the best ones are to be found in Going Once. Plus check out How to Spot a Fake Antique, so that you don't make any costly mistakes...
