Meet Patsy Palmer

If there's one thing in life that is a great leveller, it's having kids. It doesn't matter who you are - whether politician or bin man, actor or unemployed - we all have to face the dilemmas and worries that having kids can bring. And former EastEnders actress Patsy Palmer felt so strongly about devoting proper time to her children, she left her long-term role in the soap as Bianca to ensure she could be a mum who wasn't a stranger to her kids.

This made Patsy the perfect choice as Baby Squad presenter and it was an experience she relished and enjoyed, not least because of the show's informal style involving lots of normal, everyday mums. "What I like about the programme is the way it's me and some mums sat around talking about our experiences" she told us. "They're mums that everyone can identify with. It just feels like you're sitting around having a coffee and talking about your kids and a lot of people don't get that luxury I'm afraid."

It soon becomes clear that parenting is Patsy's life these days with Charlie, Fenton and Emilia occupying most of her time. She certainly doesn't miss the hours and hours of hard graft working on the soap opera that made her name - "I don't miss EastEnders, no. Not one bit. If I missed it, I'd still be there" - she straight bats early in the conversation. Meanwhile, presenting is described as "good fun" but "a bit nerve-racking as it's not what I do". Her next work project is mysteriously referred to as "a film - but I can't say any more."

But despite the outlook on the work front looking good, Brighton resident Patsy sees herself just like any other Mum, aware of all the tremendous highs and crashing lows that come with parenting. "It's quite scary being a parent - especially when you're deprived of sleep, you're hungry, you've got screaming babies around you, you don't leave the house, you haven't got a job, no money, illnesses...people have lots of problems bringing up their kids" she stresses. Hence, her love of parenting programmes and commitment to working on Baby Squad.
