Metallic skirt, £45 by Warehouse
Infinitely more forgiving than high-waist trousers is the high-waist skirt. A-line or pleated styles are actually remarkably easy to wear (particularly if you hold in your tummy with a cheeky Spanx beneath). Add a silky or wispy top like this chocolate blouse (£35, also Warehouse) and it'll take your wardrobe in a whole new direction.Available from: Warehouse

Six of the Best High Waisters
The key to wearing high-waists successfully is to keep the top slimline and the accessories statement. Geri Halliwell chose not to and ended up looking like badly-dressed child of the 70s. Kate, Kylie, J-Lo and Coleen did and looked fabulous. Those with a shapely rear should approach with caution but for slim, boyish or wide figures they bestow instant, sexy curves. And if you team with a platform sandal the look is elegant and statuesque. So before you dismiss high-waists as unwearable fad, check out our favourites first ...This feature was published in April 2007.
