How to look 10 years younger
Wouldn’t it be great if you could turn back the clock without going under the knife or needle? The good news is you can. We’ve tapped beauty and fashion industry experts for their insider secrets on how to look ten years younger without resorting to dramatic procedures.
Beauty tricks
With a few careful flicks of a make-up brush and swipes of an eye-pencil, you can knock years of your appearance. Here’s what the experts suggest.
'Thick black eyeliner can be very ageing. Instead, try applying mascara right at the base of the lash line rather than at the end. This will give you an amazing lift and open the eyes. Go for lighter pink or peach lipstick as dark colours tend to make your lips look thinner, and this can draw attention to unwanted lines.
Lina Cameron, celebrity make-up artist. Clients include Sienna Miller, Scarlet Johanson and Sadie Frost.
'A well-balanced diet can help you lose weight, live longer and feel fitter. But it can also help you look younger. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables high in flavonoids and carotenoids. These two powerful plant-based antioxidants will remove the free radicals from your skin and body that cause you to age prematurely.' New You Boot Camp
'Use a silicone based primer under your foundation - this will fill in fine lines, wrinkles and open pores. Then follow with a dewy light foundation for younger looking skin. Always use blusher - applying a light pink or peach creme blusher to the apple of the cheeks will give your face a youthful glow.'
Award winning make-up artist Sarah Brock.
'As we age, brows can droop and lose definition. But you can replace that lustre with a semi permanent treatment. Otherwise, fill in any gaps in the brow line with a soft powder. This softens the brow. Avoid drawing a thick, solid line for the brow and gradually build up colour, keeping the application "feathery". For an anti ageing lift, slightly raise the mid point of the brow and blend into the existing shape. Ensure brows are maintained. Whether you choose to pluck or thread - too much brow hair will appear to drag the eyes down.'
Brow guru, Tracie Giles.
'As we age, our eyelashes can become sparse and brittle. By investing in some professionally applied eyelash extensions along with regular conditioning treatments, eyelashes will appear thicker and will help open the eye area for a more wide awake, youthful look.’
Lash expert Jinny Coffey from JINNYlash.
'Yellowing teeth are incredibly ageing and professional tooth whitening will brighten the teeth without damaging the enamel. Make sure you also regularly visit your dentist to help maintain healthy teeth gums.’
Cosmetic dentist Dr Simon Darfoor.
Style secrets
Ditch those shapeless, black items from your wardrobe. Wear the right clothes and you'll instantly shave years off your look.
'Choose pieces that work for you, that show off your best assets and that you feel confident in. When you feel good in your own skin – to the outside world that's your clothes - it shows.'
Lucia Silver, founder of design, styling and beauty service, The State of Grace.
'As women get older they tend to try hide their bodies - huge mistake! Wearing shapeless clothes will add years you don't need. Flattering on most shapes and sizes, the wrap dress is a staple wardrobe piece that every woman over 30 should own.'
Denis Todorovic, celebrity stylist. Denis's clients include Laura Whitmore, Kirsty Duffy, Natalia Grace & Seema Pathan.
'Inject a little bit of the season's trends into your existing wardrobe to keep your look modern. Also, wearing the right colours will make your skin tone look younger and brighter, and can even make you look a few pounds lighter! For those with auburn hair, colours such as oranges, teals, rusts, and brighter purple will look great. For those with blonde hair soft pastel colours work well.'
Lisa Talbot, award winning personal stylist.
'A pair of well-fitting jeans is an instant way to look younger. If you're curvy, go for a style that's tapered in at the leg but not super skinny. If you're tall, embrace a high-waisted style and go for a boot-cut leg. Pairing jeans with a great pair of heels or boots not only adds height, but done correctly it also adds class.'
Denis Todorovic, celebrity stylist.
'If you're in your thirties and forties, don't dress like a twenty-something. Instead, keep your look simple and invest in a few wardrobe staples – such as a great pair of jeans, pencil skirt or a dress – that flatter your figure perfectly. Hemlines are key here. If your skirt is too short, it will age you instantly.'
Caroline Kendal, founder of Miniwardrobe.com.
Best hairstyles
It’s tempting to hide behind your hair when you're unhappy with your looks, but a striking cut can take years off you.
'Eating foods rich in vitamin A, such as carrots and dried apricots, will help promote healthy skin and scalp, while foods like fish, meat, milk and cheese are high in protein and will give hair more strength, preventing it from breaking and splitting.'
Darren Fowler, creative director at award-winning Clipso salons.
'Hair naturally lightens in tone as we get older, and once hair is over 50% grey, you should go towards your newly lightened base rather than hankering after your sultry dark teenage natural colour; going for softer, blonde tones will look more of a natural fit.'
Celebrity hairdresser, Richard Ward. Clients include Kim Catrall, the Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa Middleton and Trinny & Susannah.
'I encourage more mature ladies to take their hair shorter to open up their gorgeous cheekbones. Don't feel that once you reach a certain age, all that you have available to you is the bob. I gave one of my clients a "Demi Moore in Ghost" style crop and it looked incredible. So be brave.'
Wella Professionals stylist, Bruno Marc Giamattei, Marc Antoni Salons.
'Mature hair works best if worn with a bit of movement to give vitality and texture, which has the effect of softening the features therefore making you look younger. Avoid harsh cuts and straight lines.'
Celebrity hairdresser, Richard Ward.
'How you put your hair up can easily take ten years off your face with the right style. Choose hair clips that tone in with your hair colour and change your look often to ward off the style rut. Trends in ponytails, partings and even how you wear your fringe change every year, so making small adjustmets to your look will keep your hair current.

Stuff you've said
Make commentHello, I've been watching the TV show '10 Years Younger' because I enjoy it and get advice on what to wear etc: I suffer with a form of blood Cancer (MDS) this I've learnt to live, but, unfortunately it's taken it's toll on my whole body especially the elasticity and condition of my skin, my main concern is my Turkey Neck. I've spent a lot of money on creams and lotions, I've looked at products like the 'Flexaway System' it's throwing more money down the drain. Question: can you recommend any neck exercises? with regard to the neck lift operation it's too costly. Thank you for reading my email, I will continue to watch '10 Years Younger ' in hope to learn more on how to dress etc.
