First dance factfile

It's your first dance as man and wife, and all eyes will be on you. Not a prospect that thrills everyone, particularly if your fiancé has two left feet. But with a little thought and planning you’ll make your first dance a showstopper (and not because you fall over).

The tunes
According to a recent poll of wedding DJs these are the most popular first dance songs:
1. Aerosmith - Don't Wanna Miss A Thing
2. Bryan Adams - Everything I Do
3. Lonestar - Amazed
4. Shania Twain - You're Still The One
5. Shania Twain - From This Moment
6. Van Morrison - Have I Told You Lately
7. James Blunt - You're Beautiful
8. Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply
9. Robbie Williams - Angels
10. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You

Fairly predictable stuff but wedding DJs have also been asked to play some decidedly off-piste (and frankly hilarious) songs including:
Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter
Babyshambles - La Belle Et La Bete
Mötorhead - Love Me Like A Reptile
Kanye West - Gold Digger
Queen – I Want To Break Free

The dance
Everyone will be watching your first dance so even if you’re going for the slow-smoochy-shuffle, give it some thought and practise it first. If you’ve got the cojones, the moves and the time to learn a YouTube breakdance routine, go for it – your wedding will become the stuff of legend.

But if you really to do it properly enlist the help of a professional dance tutor. There are plenty of instructors who will coach you either at home or in a studio and it’s a great opportunity for some fun you-time together. Packages range from £150 upwards. Try First Dance UK, Wedding Day Dance or Wedding Dance.

Take to the floor
If the thought of everyone watching you dance is just too excruciating, why not do your first dance with all your guests? Mandy Bell married last year and hired two ceroc dancers to teach all her guests the moves. “It was great - the tutors gave us an hour’s dance lesson at the start of the evening and everyone loved it.”

I'm a celebrity!
If you're flashing some serious cash (and if you don't mind the attention being diverted from you and your betrothed) consider booking a celebrity to sing or play during your first dance. When Sheikh Mohammed booked Kylie to sing at the launch party of Atlantis Palm Jumeirah hotel he stumped up a whopping £1.3m. Sam Ronson charges £17k per set and of course there’s always the possibility that LiLo (and therefore Heat mag) may rock up too. Check out Plush Entertainment or Celebrities Worldwide.

Top tips
• Don’t leave it til the last minute to start practising, especially if you’re booking lessons. The closer it gets to the big day the busier you’ll be
• Basic stuff but don’t drink too much. If one of you is holding the other up it won’t look terribly stylish
• Don’t practice your routine in your wedding shoes but do gently break them in so they’re not too slippy
• If you’re having your big day recorded brief your videographer with all the details, especially any killer moves to zoom in on.
