Pulling together revealing - and often shocking - footage from police archives, we piece together a picture of life on the front line for our hard-pressed forces, up against it battling felons all across the land as they try to keep our roads safe.
Jamie Theakston narrates as we mainly follow the day-to-day workings of the South Yorkshire Traffic Unit, who have their work cut out dealing with the seemingly endless lawlessness.
On a good day, they may only have relatively minor instances of road rage and car theft to tackle. For the most part, though, they have more serious crime to contend with.
On one occasion, the squad have to set off in hot pursuit when motorbike thieves ride desperately through gardens and pedestrian precincts in a bid to avoid being caught. There is also tragedy when a driver high on drugs runs over some schoolchildren.
