A Life of Grime
Over a six month period in Summer 2001 a BBC camera crew shadowed staff from Salford Environmental Services in pursuit of some of the grimiest tasks in our city - and a Life of Grime was born!
Salford Environmental Services
Councillor Maureen Lea of the Environmental Services in Salford is proud of the programme and enthuses: "Life of Grime showed a little-known side of Salford, and brought just a glimpse of some of a city's most difficult jobs right into the TV viewer's living room. What was evident in all these programmes was the dedication to duty and the skill of our staff. I enjoyed seeing the unique character of Salford people shine through".
Barry Eden: Star of the Crematorium
There's more to Barry than the guy who works at Salford's Peel Green Crematorium. As well as looking after mourners and ministers, he is also in charge of the music which means a lot to him. "Ours is a very difficult job which has to be handled with sensitivity... I have a really good collection of music, and ... it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to provide that extra service and make the occasion just that little bit more special. It's something people really appreciate."
Byron Hunt: the "rat catcher"
Byron, the Pest Control Officer, says that the great thing about his line of work is that residents are always pleased to see him! After fifteen years on the job and training in the army, he's a dab hand at trapping rats, mice and other vermin, as well as squirrels and pigeons that are a problem when they nest in people's lofts. "We keep the rats sorted and that's for sure!" In the first episode, Byron and co worker Steve Hodgkinson introduce their menagerie of rescued fish, spiders and love birds - all called Charlie to keep things simple.
Diane Watkin: Tasty job
Diane is the Senior Environmental Health Officer and has an unusual job that takes her from award winning curry houses to inspecting dodgy food for local residents. "We often get people popping in to bring samples of smelly food they have just bought - chicken and prawns are the favourite. But the part of the job I really enjoy is when you've inspected a place and found some problems - and you return to find the owners have improved things, are really enthusiastic and can't wait to show you what they've done. It's really encouraging!"
Duane Hignett: The artist slayer
Someone has to do it! Duane Hignett is a Graffiti operative with a propensity for forgetting things.. like where he put the car keys... Making the city cleaner is important to Duane who's been on the graffiti squad for 18 months and says: "I enjoy travelling round and meeting different people. It's also good to be able to make things look better!"
