Top Gear: The Presenters

Top Gear has been on the road for over 20 years, and is still the Ferrari of motoring shows, thanks in no small part to the presenters it's had along the way.

Noel Edmonds
Older viewers might recall that when 'Top Gear' began in the late 1970s, one of its presenters was Noel Edmonds. Edmonds returned for a one-off appearance in the late 1990s to test drive the legendary Ferrari GT40. Jeremy Clarkson had been due to film the feature, but Clarkson's tall frame prevented him from driving the car, to his utter dismay and Edmonds' delight.

Tony Mason
Before his stint as a 'Top Gear' presenter, Tony was a successful rally co-driver. His greatest moment came in 1972, when he navigated Roger Clark to victory in the Rally of Great Britain, beating the legendary Stig Blomqvist into second place. The Clark/Mason pairing also twice finished second in the event, in 1974 and 1975.

Tiff Needell
Tiff (Timothy to his mum) has had a long and varied racing career, including a spell in Formula 1 --"'... though his brief stint there in 1980 hardly troubled the scorers. Driving for the struggling Ensign team, he finished 23rd at Zolder in Belgium, retiring with engine problems, and failed to qualify at Monaco before losing his place to Jan Lammers.

Jeremy Clarkson
Back in his days writing for 'Performance Car' magazine, Jeremy once took part in a BMW M-Series competition at Germany's Nurburgring. He finished well down the field. Realising his lack of ability, he claimed he briefly considered driving the whole course in second gear, so that he'd at least sound as if he was going fast.

Quentin Willson
Consumer champion Quentin spent years in the industry as a journalist and trader before presenting the show. He was the first broadcaster to bring to the public's attention the huge difference in car prices between continental Europe and overpriced Britain. He now commands four-figure sums for his after-dinner speeches, which cover such topics as how not to treat customers.

Vicki Butler-Henderson
Vicki may be a fan of speed, but she's only been stopped for speeding once. She tried to charm her way out of trouble, but to no avail. Talking to Virgin Radio, she recalled: "I gave him all the chat, and did the flickety-flick thing with the hair, but he was having none of it. I was done for £150 and got three points on my licence."
