The Brothel
Filmed over the course of one very eventful year The Brothel does exactly what it says on the tin, and more! It shows the highs and lows of the lives of the working girls at one of the most famous whorehouses in the world: Madam Kitty's Cathouse and the Moonlight Bunny Ranch in Nevada, USA.
Fancy a quick one?
These two notorious establishments, both situated on the outskirts of Carson City, have established something of a reputation, thanks to the efforts of their owner, self-titled Pimp-Master General Dennis Hof. With prostitution legal in Nevada, but advertising strictly illegal, Hof must constantly come up with creative ways with which to PR his businesses and make buying sex as easy, and as unstigmatised, as grabbing a beer on the way home.
What a pro
Such handicaps have in fact have done little to deter Hof from reaching out far beyond Nevada. During the 10 years he's owned the Bunny Ranch, he claims they have averaged averaged 30,000 customers a year. What's more, Hof has been a regular guest on the infamous Howard Stern Show, CBS primetime news show 48 Hours has visited twice while Maxim, Time and the New Yorker have all run serious, in-depth articles.
Hooker, line and sinker
Many argue that Hof is not only and a legal prostitution evangelist, but an enlightened advocate of women's rights to boot. He has often been quoted as seeing the "world's oldest profession" as a chance for women to become their own bosses and indeed, at the Bunny Ranch, has created a culture of sales team motivation, awarding bonuses at all levels. Thus, under his guidance, the brothels' employees have become the ultimate time-share saleswomen, with their bodies their property.
Whores' play
What's more, Hof thinks nothing of applying normal business marketing techniques to his rather unusual business. Hence, even the US "war on terror" became a stimulus as Hof offered virgin soldiers about to go off to war in Iraq, condoms, lubricant and a free sex session worth $1,000. He even extended the offer to British servicemen, and women, if they could afford the air fare. In one priceless moment, "Ruby" takes virgin soldier Jordan's virginity and is very proud of the way she gets to educate young people. "My mom's a teacher so I kinda got a little of that". You couldn't make it up, could you?
Customer service
While the explicit sex is at a minimum, it is The Brothel's candidness that will leave you staggered. Apparently, nearly all of the 50-odd clients secretly filmed while haggling with the working girls of the Bunny Ranch signed consent forms allowing themselves to be shown on screen. Among them are a mother who brings her 22-year-old son along to lose his virginity, a married couple celebrating their 15th anniversary with a menage à trios and a widower who has gone without sex for two years and just, bless his heart, wants a bit of a cuddle.
