Five teens, five days, one goal – to change their lives at the Teen Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses
Helpful Tools
After four successful series of Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses where Amanda Hamilton (Something for the Weekend) and her team of global experts in holistic health cure extremely embarrassing conditions with a powerful detox of both body and mind; Amanda and her team will be facing their toughest test yet in an attempt to save five troubled teens, suffering with debilitating illnesses from extreme acne to menorraghia (heavy periods) and severe cystitis in Teen Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses.
The UK’s 16 – 19 year olds are some of the unhealthiest in Europe. Britain is a nation plagued by binge drinking, eating disorders and obesity.
Five teenagers with modern Britain’s ‘lifestyle emergencies’ embark on an extreme detox in the picturesque Spanish hills of Andulucia. Amanda and her team have just one week to transform their bodies and minds.
Amanda Hamilton says: “Teen Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses aims to change the lives not only of five troubled teens but to highlight the health problems of a whole generation.”
Joining the spa team for the first time is clinical Psychologist, Dr Rachel Andrew, who will focus specifically on any behavioural problems that might be exacerbating the teens’ afflictions, working with them to improve their confidence, trust and self esteem. Once they identify any digestive problems and nutritional deficiencies, Amanda and nutritionist Karen Devine will work on the teens’ bodies with a combination of daily detox, yoga, meditation and group workshops to encourage long lasting change.
These teens should be in the prime of their lives but instead they’ve been suffering in silence. Many have never been away from home before, how will they cope being separated from their families and friends?
Meet 16 year old Chloe. On the outside she’s a normal teenager, but her positive outlook and sense of humour mask her debilitating condition – excessive menstrual bleeding. Chloe has been suffering from chronic heavy periods every two weeks for the last three years. She suffers from mood swings, blackouts, severe stomach cramps, dizziness and headaches so severe she’s had problems coping at school. Sick of not being able to function at certain times of the month, Chloe feels completely isolated.
Then there’s extreme binge drinker Katie. This 19 year old wild child has been a heavy drinker since the age of 15, consuming 100 units a week, including around eight litres of cider. Out of work and drifting through life, all Katie wants to do is hang out with her friends and get wasted. An aggressive drunk, Katie’s been so down that she’s even tried to take her own life.
Spare a thought for Ryan, the 18 stone, 16 year old excessive comfort eater whose low confidence means he has given up on himself. His lack of self-esteem has manifested itself in an unusual toothbrush phobia, which has prevented Ryan from brushing his teeth for five years. Ryan longs to be able to play football with his friends for more than 15 minutes at a time without getting out of breath and being relegated to the sidelines.
Hormones raging and filled with teenage angst, growing up is hard enough but these teens have one common goal, to feel and look better and be like any normal teenager. Will Amanda and the team be able to turn their lives around before it’s too late?..
Teen Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses will premiere on UKTV Style on Monday 12th January at 10pm.
The five teens taking part in the show are:
• Alex Long, 18, Acute Cystitis
• Tom Matthews, 16, Severe Acne.
