UKTV’s second factual channel to rebrand, Blighty, has ordered a raft of three commissions that capture the spirit of contemporary Britain – My Brilliant Britain, Save Our Boozer (working title) and Made In Britain.
Commissioned by Jane Rogerson, UKTV’s Director of Factual and Factual Entertainment Commissioning, and ordered by Adrian Wills, Blighty and Eden’s Channel Head and Jane Mote, Director of Factual, Lifestyle and New Media, all three series have been commissioned to mark the relaunch of UKTV People as Blighty on Tuesday 17th February 2009.
UKTV’s Jane Rogerson says: “There’s nowhere like Britain, and no channel like Blighty. These stand-out series showcase the very best of Britain, our talent and our people in a fun and mischievous way that is sure to appeal to the channel’s target audience.”
UKTV’s Adrian Wills adds: “These three commissions will complement Blighty's schedule perfectly, sitting alongside quirky ob-docs, factual entertainment, wildlife, and programmes that celebrate the British outdoors to capture the spirit of contemporary Britain.”
Premiering on launch night at 9pm, My Brilliant Britain is a 10 x 30’ factual entertainment series made by Prospect Pictures that follows a host of unconventional British celebrities as they reveal their personal Blighty passions and what they think makes Britain so unique. Well-known faces include Vic Reeves sharing his love of Harris Tweed; Goldie and his passion for the full English breakfast; Danny Wallace and his obsession with quirky museums; as well as Kelvin Mackenzie’s exploration of what makes the British sense of humour so distinctive. My Brilliant Britain is executive produced by UKTV’s Jane Rogerson, Prospect’s Todd Austin and Peter Wyles, with Paul Tizey as series producer.
The second commission is ITV Studio’s 5 x 30’ Made In Britain with Dom Joly, an irreverent ob-doc series full of humour and warmth with a bit of jeopardy, discomfort, business and history thrown in. Part road-movie, part social experiment, Dom will travel the British Isles in an effort to restock his home and to re-clothe himself in items that have been made in Britain. But is this possible, is it even desirable and what exactly does this ‘buying British’ mean? Executive producers are UKTV’s Catherine Catton and Granada’s Michele Carlisle, with Yvonne Alexander as series producer. Made In Britain will premiere on Blighty from 9pm on the Queen’s official birthday (Trooping of the Colour) on 15th June.
Comissioned by UKTV Director of Entertainment, Lisa Perrin, the third series ordered Save Our Boozer (working title) will be co-produced by Twofour and Eye Film and TV. The 5 x 60’ formatted ob-doc series will see millionaire landlord Jay Smith lead five communities as they revamp their stricken pubs, taking them over for good as part of a mission to reinvigorate the great British boozer in their home town. Everyone involved will be trained in all the necessary skills to run their pub as a successful not for profit organisation, ploughing any money made back into their community. Executive produced by UKTV’s Lisa Perrin and Catherine Catton, Twofour’s Melanie Leach and Eye’s Charlie Gauvain, Save Our Boozer will premiere on Blighty at 9pm from St George’s Day (23rd April).
Blighty will go live on-air at 09:00 on Tuesday 17th February with a remit to unashamedly celebrate all that is great, unique and inspirational about Britain today. Packed with programmes that explore the complexity, irony, contradictory and definitely quirky traits of modern Britain, Blighty will revel in what makes this country brilliant. From Who Do You Think You Are? and Coast to Trawlermen and Louis Theroux Meets… alongside the raft of aforementioned commissions. Blighty will give viewers permission to indulge in everything that is brilliant about Britain. A complementary website with the url www.loveblighty.co.uk will also launch on the same day.
Supported with the end line 'One nation under a channel', the new multi-platform brand will primarily target young couples in their 30s and 40s who are interested in reconnecting with the country they live in. The channel will also attract anyone who is secretly proud of Britain's landscape, heritage, music, sense of humour, or who loves the eccentricity of the British themselves.
Following the successful rebrand of UKTV’s entertainment portfolio as Dave, G.O.L.D., Watch and Alibi – which saw the network achieve its highest reach to date of 36.5million viewers in December 2008 - Blighty will be the second of the British broadcaster’s factual channels to be rebranded following Eden’s launch on 26th January 2009. UKTV History will be relaunched as Yesterday later in March (exact date to be announced). The final wave of the network’s ambitious rebrand to create a portfolio of multiplatform brands will be completed in Q2 2009 with the re-launch of its lifestyle offerings.
