Their own cheese is great, as others have said, but they are also very knowledgeable about the rest of the cheese they sell, which is always in perfect condition.

Childwickbury Goats take great pride in hand-producing delicious cheeses, and they also show a commitment to keeping it local and as environmentally-friendly as possible. It's a pleasure to see all the family members sharing responsibility on their market stall at the general market in St Albans and at the farmer's market monthly on a Sunday. My dinners with friends are seldom without one of their lovely creamy cheeses and I can brag that they are made 'just up the road'.

Built up from a self-sufficiency dream, C.G's produces a small amount of wonderful cheese that is completely hand-made, giving full rein to the flavour of the goat's milk. Started with only 2 now 50, well loved goats that are all fed on home grown hay, supplimented by sugar beet residue. Elizabeth Harris produces 200 to 250 cheeses a week, half of which is sold at St Albans weekly market (once a month at the Farmers Market) and the other half goes for sale at Neal's Yard in Covent Garden. Elizabeth doesn't want to compromise the quality of the product by expanding but is in desperate need of improvements to the dairy, which remains much as it was when she and her husband set it up 14 years ago. Childwickbury Goats are a true Local Food Hero. Their cheese does the minimum number of road miles to get to us, it's completely hand made to let the real flavour do the selling. But it all comes down to a passion for food and happy goats!
