Description
Still located on the property Henry Coales purchased, F. E. Coales & Son is now in its third generation. It has been almost 100 years since this butcher shop opened (1910), and although it has changed names a couple of times, the business is still very much in the family - they still operate with traditional practices, deal with the same producers Henry Coales did, and prepare a lot of their meat products with their own recipes. 95% of these are made on the premises.

I love this father and son team. They promote local meat and produce, locally grown and locally slaughtered. I know where the meat comes from and I know that it has not been slaughtered in a horrible environment. They provide great advice and I have never had a bad piece of meat from them. They are passionate about what they do, and their enthusiasm is catching.

I love this shop. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them. Their home produce is gorgeous - especially the garlic and basil sausages and the black pudding. You can buy cuts of meat here that you certainly won't find in the supermarket - like skirts and neck of lamb for instance. The range of produce they carry is amazing, from the traditional beef, pork, lamb to the likes of pheasant, hare, venison, partridge etc. all of which is locally sourced and prepared in their own abbatoir. They are very knowledgbale about their products and have some wonderful cooking suggestions. Try shoulder of lamb stuffed with black pudding. Amazing. Now I've been here I'll never go back the supermarket for my meat again. Everything about their meat is better - texture, taste, quality

How a butcher's should be (or any retail outlet for that matter). Mr Coates and his family are lovely friendly people who will spend as much time as you want with you and explain everything about there produce you could ever wantt too know. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they appear very interested in what you are buying and cooking. They stock a vast selection of produce, meats and cuts, many that other butcher's now dont bother with. I would encourage anyone too pop along and visit this most special of place

Friendly, knowledgable and helpful staff who can advise on cuts, quantities and recipes. Local farm produced meat the best I have ever ever eaten. Home cooked products - must try the sausage rolls, pork pies, steak pies etc. Home cured bacon which tastes like bacon used to. Always new products to try & your opinion is always appreciated. The best haggis and black puding ever - a truly magnificent local food hero

I decided to shop at F E Coales & Son for my meat nearly 3 years ago when I finally became fed up with what supermarkets had to offer. With local, English meat available, the taste is simply incredible and I haven't looked back since! The meat is delicious, prepared to perfection and always with so much care. The amount of meat you actually get for your money is so much better value than in the supermarket, it's fantastic. F E Coales & Son is the best butcher by far and is such a welcoming family run business, it's a joy to visit. They are always so helpful if I have any questions on how best to cook meat, they really provide an all round service! Knowing where our meat comes from is vitally important to my husband and I, so knowing that it is all local, fresh and properly prepared is very re-assuring. The reputation of F E Coales is simply outstanding, always winning awards for excellence, their customers visit them from miles around! Luckily for me, I only live a mile away from them! F E Coales & Son is definitely my food hero!
