Description
Established in 1936, this family business is the sort of traditional food hall that used to be commonplace in British towns. The deli boasts more than 100 cheeses - more than half of them British farmhouse cheeses - and a wide range of cooked meats, including home-cooked ham and pies, along with pâtés, salads and roasted-on-the-premises coffee, which can also be enjoyed in the refurbished café.

Guntons is one of Colchester's great delights. A good old fashioned deli stuffed full of delightful fare. They have a fabulous collection of cheeses and cold meats as well as olives etc. They also supply a wide variety of coffees. The shop is crammed full of goodies not to be found in your average supermarket. Long may they last!

I challenge anybody to walk around Guntons for a while and NOT to come out with a bag of food. It is impossible. The magnetic attraction of the cheese counter is too great to resist. The range of food makes your imagination run away with you! The irresistable smell of the coffee which can be freshly ground for you. This is a true delicatessen in every sense. You get great service from very friendly people. This really is a national treasure.

Keith Gunton (and before him his dad) and family have managed to keep a traditional grocers shop thriving despite supermarkets and the net. The choice of cheese, jams and coffee is brilliant. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Their support for local food suppliers is legendary, and if you want something out of the ordinary ask- if Keith can't get it, he will know someone who can help.
