Description
This Norfolk red brick mill was built in 1802, but by 1982 was slowly falling into disrepair. Restored by Mike Thurlow, Letheringsett ís now a fully functional water-powered flour mill producing several varieties of flour from Norfolk-grown wheat. Mike is one of only 27 remaining water flour millers in the UK and is not only helping to keep a lost art alive but is also championing the use of organic spelt flour – one of the oldest grains, first used by the Romans. Spelt flour is also incredibly good for people with mild gluten allergies. Visitors can see the mill at work and buy bread and flour from the small shop.

We travel from Chelmsford to buy this flour, which is second to none and have been doing so for about 15 years. How about some outlets down here Mike?

They make flour, all different types, with no artificial additives or preservatives, just pure flour. I believe they won the award last year!

Great man, great place, great product. I was a sceptic, I am now convinced.

The sheer commitment of Mike and his family to this project is a wonderful story. The preservation of "real food" production is so important in these days of ignorance about our diets. Fantastic taste and goodness comes naturally here !

Mike's fascinating, enthusiastic talk and working demonstration really brings the world of milling alive. You must try the spelt flour!

The passion of Mike Thurlow for the mill he has lovingly restored is inspirational. This alone makes the mill worthy of my vote but if you add to this the fact that the flour Mike produces is without parallel, you having an unbeatable combination!

Mike was willing to chat and talked to us about everything he's faced in restoring this mill. My 19mth old son was mesmorised by it all. We came home with some of the best flour there is.

I brought a bread making machine 3 years ago and tried different flour from the supermarket with some bad results. I then brought letheringsett strong bread flour and I don' buy anything else, I like to mix the flours I get to try and get a nice soft loaf which I get every time. I phone my order in and it always there waiting for me, I do sometimes forget to phone but nothing is too much trouble for Mr.Thurlow.
