Chatsworth House is the grandest expression of private wealth in the country. Dating back to the Elizabethan age, it boasts the largest private collection of neo-classical art in the world and tells the story of a single dynasty over 12 generations. As Britain's first Baroque palace it was also responsible for a revolution in architectural design.

Your review of Chatsworth House
Originally the home of the formidable Bess of Hardwick and her second husband Sir William Cavendish, Chatsworth was transformed into the magnificent palace you see today by the 1st Duke of Devonshire at the end of the 17th century. With its sumptuous furnishings, alabaster carvings and Italian sculptures the house became a statement of Devonshire's wealth and power despite his supposedly humble Protestant beliefs. Look out for the interiors which embody the Baroque interpretation of the classical era and visit the 6th Duke's impressive purpose built Sculpture Gallery and private chapel. To visit Chatsworth is to discover some of the most outstanding examples of European architecture and landscaping in Britain. No visit is complete without exploring the magnificent Capability Brown-designed parkland with a spectacular Grillet cascade.
