Your review of Canterbury Cathedral
The origins of this Cathedral date back to 597 AD when the first Archbishop of Canterbury, St Augustine, was sent from Rome to England by the Pope.

It became a site on the historical map when the Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the north-east Transept on Tuesday 29 December 1170 by guards that overheard King Henry II say "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Becket's shrine was destroyed in 1538 on the orders of King Henry VIII. Today, a simple candle marks the place where it once stood and the pink stone before it bears the imprint of thousands of pilgrims' knees.

Visit the Romanesque-style crypt, the largest of its period in the country and the oldest existing part of the Cathedral, dating back to the 11th Century. Today, the Cathedral stands as a magnificent product of innovative gothic stone masonry and a place where prayer to God has been offered daily for over 1,400 years.
