Britain's Best may have started as a vote to find the best historical site in Britain but it has always been so much more than just a popularity contest. It provides a unique opportunity for you to share your personal favourites with everyone and unearth historical gems from your area that nobody else knows about.

Quite simply, Britain's Best aims to be the most comprehensive, informative and inspiring directory of historical sites on the internet - and we need your help to make it even bigger.

When Britain's Best first started, its presenter, Alan Titchmarsh, pointed out that the "whole essence" of the series was "interactivity" which is why Britain's Best has been designed so you can tell us all about the places important to you.

The directory doesn't ignore the sites we've all heard of. Big tourist attractions like The Tower of London, HMS Victory and Stonehenge are all there, but it also showcases hundreds of smaller sites that you wouldn't find in your average tourist guide.

And we want you tell us about all of them. Did that famous Royal Palace live up to the hype? Have you discovered the perfect family day out? Which site is the country's best-kept secret?

So if you've got a place you're passionate about, you can upload all the details to the site, including any photos or videos you might have and comments on what really makes a great day out in Britain. By taking part, you're helping to create a unique guide with honest comments and personal memories of some incredible places, inspiring others to discover them for themselves.

UKTV History would like to thank all of the historical sites who have shown such dedicated support for the Britain's Best campaign. We would also like to thank all Britain's Best partners, including Golden Tours, Cottages4You and Heritage magazine.

In creating the directory, we have used the following book for information: Landmarks of Britain: The Five Hundred Places That Made Our History by Clive Aslet.

If you need more information about how the vote was carried out, check out the full Terms & Conditions.

Confused Tamworth where?

Re ted42:
Obviously Britains Best did exactly what it said on the tin and "unearthed historical gems from your area that nobody else knows about."
Tamworth is right in the centre of England, Staffordshire and was the capital of the Kingdom of Mercia, birthplace to the Robin Reliant, Sir Robert Peel (founder of the Metropolitan Police Force) and also the Tamworth Sandyback pig! All of which you could've discovered if you'd bothered to click on Tamworth Castle.
There's certainly some interesting places in the top 10, hopefully people will broaden their horizons and visit them to discover for themselves why people voted for them.
