Gemma from The Farm Of Fussy Eaters
"It's limited in the sense of what it does for me, it's pure stodge...it's rubbish, and that's how I feel when I wake each day as well."
Gemma, 23 lives on a diet of "stodge and red meat". She has a severe aversion to fruit and vegetables and can't even sit in front of them without feeling physically sick.
Following the death of her brother and her parents' divorce when she was a child, Gemma's diet was severely affected as she desperately tried to recover from her trauma. Mealtimes became extremely distressing and her friends and family believe it was a cry for help and a way of seeking attention in times of stress.
Gemma is now desperate to overcome her phobia of fruit and vegetables and to expand her diet beyond pasta, meat, rice, noodles, potatoes and bread. She believes that she has a serious food phobia problem that no one understands. Even her boyfriend can't resist teasing her about her food hang-ups.
The texture of food is what bothers Gemma the most and she desperately wants to change "more than anything in the world. The physical reaction and feeling I have is overpowering...the sweating and the crying..."
In coming to The Farm of Fussy Eaters Gemma hopes she'll be able to move on from her childhood phobia and at least be capable of sitting in front of fruit and vegetables and salad - maybe even eating one or two varieties of each.
