Professionals
If you go the professional route, ensure you use a locksmith who is a member of the Master Locksmiths Association, which satisfies most insurance companies.

Alarms
An alarm approved and maintained by the National Approval Council for Security Systems (NACOSS) helps lower premiums with the majority of insurers.
The alarm must be visible and prominent on the outside of your home to be a deterrent to burglars as well as an alert after a break-in.
It is best to get an alarm installed by an expert - preferably by a NACOSS-approved company. Check with your insurer to make sure they recognise your chosen specialist, or ask for a recommendation.
If you go the DIY route, make sure you have the practical knowledge necessary - a badly installed alarm can be a liability and might not be recognised by your policy.

External lights
External lights that switch on when they detect movement can win you money off your premiums. You can buy sensors separately to convert an existing outdoor light to a security one. Fitting these kind of devices is an easy DIY job.

Safe not sorry
Don't be tempted to give false information when you apply for insurance. Exaggerating your system or pretending you have security features you don't will make your policy invalid when you do attempt to make a claim and you could end up losing twice.

Watch out
Setting up or joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme could help cut crime and also qualify for an insurance premium discount. Log on to find a local group or ask your local police station. While you're there, get a free copy of Your Practical Guide to Crime Prevention for extra tips.
