The Natural Look

The most easy-on-the-eye trend to date that looks good in any style of house is the recent slant towards all things natural. This look spells relaxed and informal elegance - a comfortable style with effortless sophistication. And although its roots are firmly planted in city living, it's warmer and has a wider appeal than its urban contemporary, white minimalism. City look or not, it's equally at home in a country cottage and an airy loft, and, as long as you stick within a natural palette, you're unlikely to make any major decorating disasters.

Colour-wise opt for a mix of mushroom, caramel, stone, dove grey, biscuit, coffee and clotted cream on walls - stick to one colour and pick out details such as cornice, window frames, skirting and doors in a richer shade, or go for two or even three paint colours on the walls to add interest. If you go for the multicolour paint option, keep colours as near to each other as possible for subtlety - anything too contrasting and the colours will fight with each other. If you prefer wallpaper, check out textured hessians or panelled wood effect designs to add more depth and interest.

Mix your materials for an elemental look - leather, suede and wood are perfectly at ease next to stone, marble, glass, raffia, linen, cotton and wool. Layers work well with this cosy look, so pile up touchy-feely cushions and throws on sofas and chairs; frame soft folds of a roman blind made from simple cream calico with a natural voile or roughly-woven curtains; place a Flokati or deep pile rug underneath a Wenge wood coffee table; spread a woven bamboo table runner over a pure white table cloth for dining. If you yearn for a touch of colour, add a geometric rug or pieces of earthenware and coloured glass in rich autumnal moss green or amber shades. Heighten the cosiness of the natural look with accent lighting - uplighters make for a softer light in a room and there's nothing more intimate and relaxing than the flicker of candlelight. So what are you waiting for? Get back to nature with our selection of what's hot on the high street.
