Okehampton Castle

Allegedly haunted since the sixteenth century, Okehampton Castle was once the largest Castle in Devon and home to Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon.

Old Royal Naval College

Built for charitable public purpose rather than to glorify personal status, the Old Royal Naval College has been a place much enjoyed and admired since it was established by Royal Charter in 1694 for the relief and support of seamen and their dependents.

Old Sarum

A windswept hilltop in Wiltshire that has captured the imagination for more than 5,000 years. At first Old Sarum (Old Salisbury) was just a mound treated with reverence and respect until the Bronze Age (2000BC) when people started to bury their dead there. Then an Iron Age fortress was built, followed by a military post in Roman times, a Saxon royal estate and then, by the time of the Norman conquest in 1066, a royal palace and cathedral. Now you can wander amongst its ruins, explore the medieval site and imagine what it would have been like to live there.

Old Scatness Broch & Iron Age Village

One of the most exciting excavation projects in Britain, the site contains evidence for settlement dating from the Bronze Age to the present century. Recent work has revealed part of a 19th century crofting settlement, 17th century midden deposits, a Pictish building with rooms formed by stone piers surrounding a central space, like the spokes of a wheel, and the remains of an imposing Iron Age round tower, known as a broch.
