Archery

Archery

Winning archery contests has been a regular pastime for countless reincarnations of Robin Hood and skill with a bow and arrow was an important part of medieval life. Archers were a vital part of the medieval army, able, as demonstrated in the later middle ages at famous battles like Crecy and Agincourt, to decimate armies constructed largely of posh French knights on horseback. Archers were so important that 100 years before Robin Hood, King Henry I passed legislation that allowed anyone who accidentally killed someone during archery practice to escape prosecution.

Tavern Trivia: This same King Henry I was the great-grandfather of Kings Richard and John and was accused of murdering his own brother, King William II in a hunting "accident" in the New Forest.
