The real world of Robin Hood – A guide for the historically inept

Robin Hood may only be a tight-wearing work of fiction, but the world in which he is supposed to have lived was very real indeed. Traditionally set during the reign of Richard the Lionheart, Robin and his band of Merry Men would have robbed the rich (before giving to the poor) during the late twelfth century. Use our beginner's guide to blag your way around this world and impress your easily impressed friends with knowledge only really clever people in dusty libraries are supposed to know.

The Historical Context

The Historical Context

In most of the Robin Hood stories, our hero, Robin of Loxley, returns home from fighting in the Crusades to find his lands have been usurped by Guy of Gisbourne and the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. The Crusade in question is the Third Crusade which lasted from 1189-1192 and saw King Richard the Lionheart take on his Muslim advisory, Saladin. However, shortly before Christmas 1192, Richard was captured on his way home by an ally of his enemy, the Holy Roman Emperor. Richard was held captive until February 1194, but during this period his brother John attempted to seize power for himself. Enter Robin Hood, the outlaw loyal to "Good" King Richard who would fight all who supported John, including the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Tavern Trivia: Richard the Lionheart was King of England for 10 years but he spent less than 10 months of that time in England.
