Britain’s best-known steeplejack Fred Dibnah turns historical investigator to explore the genius and vision behind some of the country’s greatest buildings. The man best known for demolishing buildings goes behind the scenes to demonstrate how architects, engineers and builders behind the great medieval structures worked at a time when there were no power tools, no concrete, no steel, no engines and no heavy machinery.
The series, new to UKTV Gardens, takes a trip across the country that encompasses Peterborough Cathedral and Ely Cathedral, dating from just after the Norman Conquest in the 11th and 12th centuries, to Caernarfon Castle, Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and The Palace of Westminster. The series also allows Fred to realise a long-held personal ambition - to stand on the top of Big Ben.
Fred also does his own detective work and digs out the correspondence between the architects, builders and clients, as well as finding out how the building materials were sourced, their cost, and the size of the workforce. As well as this, he illustrates the basic mechanics involved, with the aid of his own drawings and working models.
