JackW I thought I was the only one. If a cookbook does not have pictures I just can't get into it. The photo tells me in a flash what the dish is..I don't have to go through the ingredients list and method to understand what it is.
The photos are so evocative there is no way they can be replaced with words.
In fact, I don't think I even own a pictureless cookbook. I just wouldn't use it. Even where a book has only some recipes with pictures, those are the ones I try.
As for time saving tips, I always make twice the quantity and freeze half. It's amazingly simple when you get into the habit. Making stuffed chciken breast for four? Then make 8 and freeze 4. Your freezer quickly becomes a source of delightful meals without any added effort!

Yes! I'm with BBQ fiend....a whole series of barbeque techniques and great recipes would be most welcome. A great idea. MK seems so euro-centric in its cookery examples and chefs, it would be nice if they for once broke out of that mould.
Every culture seems to have some sort of open-flame cooking, so it would be a wonderfully diverse programme series! Common' MK, get with it.

I too had completely forgot about Market Kitchen but decided to watch noght before last. For God's sake, what drivel! AWFUL!
And I simply cannot understand why Tana Ramsey is still on this show. Regardless of any purported knowledge and cookery skill, she is just not television material.
In fact, the more I think about it, Tana may be the reason I just do NOT like this show one iota.
Cybell, no MK is not a "real" programme in the classic sense of the word. It's what's called a "production", and what a bad one at that.

Hear! Hear! tickedoff. I could not have sent it better. It's an appalling television show.

Well I can't be as drastic as that as there are shows on UKTVFood that are fantastic - in my opinion - and I can't bring myself to "boycott" a whole channel because of this dreadful Market Kitchen.
But you are right, camden, the viewership of the loyal viewers - the ones that REALLY care about food programming, is clearly off due to this miserable flagship programme.
Poorly done, poorly presented and SOOO boring!

Yes, Season 2 is as bad as Season 1.
As someone said on another thread, Market Kitchen is like the horror of the movie Groundhog Day, waking up day after day with the same undesirable outcome. Whoever produces this show doesn't seem to know anything about food, and certainly isn't a foody. They also don't seem to know much about good television, either.
Of all the great TV shows out there, what can these people be thinking with this programme? Do they think it is engaging? Do they think it is entertaining? UKTVFood has shot themselves in the foot (head?) with this dreadful fare.
I agree, we truly are seeing a regurgitation of Season 1 of Market Kitchen.
Not a creative or positive change to the show has been made. Clearly they DID go on holidays during the break.

Quinoa makes excellent salad. Here's something that I always enjoy from Emeril [link]
The quinoa can be substituted with bulghar wheat or even couscous

lv, look for my quinoa suggestion on the other thread.
As for MK - it just doesn't do it for me whatsoever. I like almost any cooking show but cannot endure even half an episode of MK. I just fade awy for some reason. I can't really explain it.

Gastro, the pancakes WERE burnt! Very unappetising if you ask me.
You have spotted the positive of MK, it's difficult to stay interested. How many times I've just gone to the kitchen or come here to the board while MK is on.
Perhaps it is simply down to the presenters. F or me, they have zeo charisma.

Thanks for the link, cheese
It's good to read we'll be hearing from Jeni again soon. Where/when is the show going to air?

And as posset also noticed, Peter Gordon was using Sainsbury's Olorosso Sherry in his Chicken Jus on Friday's show. That begs the question as to what is wrong with the Waitrose's Sherry doesn't it!
These little blunders happen every day, and as Sock put it so delicately "I think it shows how little the people making the show actually care" Indeed.
Can't we just be rid of this programme? Even Locatelli came off lame.

I'm with LV on this one - just end the show. Like freddyG, it isn't that we've boycotted the channel but since the introduction of Market Kitchen our viewing habits changed dramatically. Every night we used to switch on GFL and the fun began......and yes UKTVFood would then stay on for the rest of the evening.
No longer. UKTVFood has ruined their own channel.

Gastro, I love the Hairy Bikers and it was a pleasure to see them on MK as they did indeed inject some humour into this lifeless show. I don't know why they were always being interrupted, though, as they could have handled the programme singlehandedly (doublehandedly?)
I, too, don't think I would want to subject myself to this programme if I were a celebrity chef. I'd steer clear.

Barry, I think that this program is doomed. They've given it every opportunity and it just doesn't entertain.
I agree that it's now gone on far too long for anyone now to take notice if they were to fix it up. The tweaks with the presenteres hasn't reallt helped and even when they put on proven great TV chef personalities the nature of the show just drains out any personality or fun.

A show that had Matthew Fort try to make a poached egg in a £100,000 diamond encrusted pot in front of Giorgio Locatelli? Give me a complete break.
Dreadful.
And he couldn't even make a poached egg! Complete drivel.

I am really enjoying the "search for perfection" series now being run. Very stimuating and a completely different perspective on food. And Blumenthal is entertaining and self-depricating. It's a nice change from the likes of Tana R and Matt T, that's for sure.

No way. I’m sorry, but not even having Great Food Live as a lead-in to this programme would have saved it.
In fact it could have hastened the demise of MK because the comparison between the two shows would have been so stark. Imagine jumping from Jeni to Tana
Chalk and cheese. How did they ever think Market Kitchen would fly?? Car crash TV.
To have changed the programming around the way they have – and the interminable repeats of previously aired repeated reruns – simply shows total incompetence.

You're right Poolman, we need Jeni back pronto!

Well her voice is better than nothing but I agree, her energy and talent are really meant for the little screen [although I do enjoy her on the radio, too]
Since UKTVFood carries almost all of the BBC programmes, at least eventually, let's hope these shows get aired here on UKTVFood ASAP!
And guess what show it could replace??

And what about the other weirdness lately? Do you know where you can buy deep fried bees, per chance?
And the wonderful marinated snake. Yum.
I have no idea what "proper" means in this context. Presumably where all of us shop on a daily basis isn't "proper"
My, my!!

Awful, awful, awful. I can't imagine that they selected Gary Rhodes for this after his appalling - and insulting - India show. Rhodes has to be the most arrogant, self-opinionated, egocentric chef in all Britain.
And he's not that good.
It should just be called "The Gary Rhodes Show". This is not fair judging at all with just a single person's "opinion". This isn't a competition at all, it's a farce of Rhodes' "favourites".
Rhodes should not be allowed to do television until he can get a grip on his ego.
A terrible show.

I couldn't agree more that UKTV Food is sinking fast. Soon it will be just known as the channel that brings us Gary Rhodes and Market Kitchen drivel.
Why are they putting Rhodes on all these shows? They should just put him on MK and be done with the whole mess.

breadman that is absolutely HILARIOUS
"The Mary Celeste Channel" I'll have to refer to it that way from now on.
Drifting in the television ocean without direction and with only ghosts on board!!

I wouldn't worry about that Oyster, it's not really worth watching.
What is the top cooking show down-under right at the moment? Is there any Australian food productions we should be seeing here in the mother country??

While I can't really say I like the programme, you're right about the "food element" gastrosurf. I too wonder why they would pick "all bright" over JB for this show? Very poor choice. But just one more in a series of stuff-ups with British cooking programmes lately.
Isn't Ed Baines great? A great foil for Jeni as he's calm, deliberate and reserved [unlike our Jeni!!]
When you mentioned putting Jeni on the roulette wheel I momentarily thought of that other (vertical) gambling wheel you see on old Westerns with Jeni tied to it revolving around
Oh well, must be time for bed! Or a glass of red...
As you guess by the time of my post I did NOT watch Market Kitchen tonight!
