Long time reader, first time poster. I can't STAND this programme. It's trite, artificial and concocted. Do they think the viewers are idiots? Celebrity presenters, simulated competitions and a make-believe cafe are hardly the stuff of a serious cookery show.
Get real!!

Can we please, please have GFL and Jeni Barnett back

WildWhit, we can only hope they take this suggestion seriously and put on GFL repeats in the early evening hours. In my mind it doesn't have to replace MK though...they can show that dreadful fare to their heart's content.
Just bring back something fun for the dinner hour viewing. It's really not too much to ask, would not cost one cent and would only push aside Gary Rhodes Cookery Year repeats to another timeslot.
Good heavens...hardly a big ask is it???

I think what people are saying when they use the word "snob" here is really reflecting what comes across on the screen as a condescending tone or mannersism. This is especially true of Tana but some could even say they see it in TPB. It's accent, mannerism and words used.
But I would just chalk it up to not having any particular training in presentation or acting skills. They haven't been in front of a TV camera that much really. They are clearly awkward and uncomfortable. So it may not be snobbery.
The real question is why, oh why, were these four picked??? Celebrity names, pretty face, it's not at all clear.

Well isn't that what we're all saying? Look back at this thread and, in fact, all the others on the board.
Look at the well thought out posts where people have obviously taken a SIGNIFICANT amount of their personal time to write in.
There is NO doubt that people are writing in because they CARE and LOVE the entire UKTVFood channel. That is why they are so very, very upset with recent programming decisions.
Worse, they see the channel in self destruct mode with bad commissioning and over-done repeats of repeats.
They had a brilliant daily live TV program which was axed inexplicably and then replaced it with a dreadful commissioning a couple weeks later.
They are on a self-destruct course. And we truly care. We want them to fix it up before everyone just tunes in elsewhere!

Conch, very silly indeed. Not a single word. Still no explanation from anyone.
Very, VERY tiresome, very irritating, very unprofessional.
When are they going to FIX their programming? Excessive repeats, the dreadful Market Kitchen show and absolutely no respect for the viewer.
Rubbish.

What's happened to the posts that were left here on 3 July and 4 July? I left a response to someone and now everything is gone???
What's going on here?
The website seems to be censoring many of the messages. Why would that be, I wonder???

Pocket Battelship, I absolutely do detect somthing has changed very recenetly on Market Kitchen as to how they choose the guest chefs.
The results are varied - IMHO - as Mark Broadbent seemed quite good in leading the presenters along (yes, I realise that's backwards!) - - - but these last two?? For goodness sake, that was terrible!!

Your comments about Tana I think a quite true ::adam. "Out of her depth" is a very polite way of putting it and really a bit of an understatement.
Have you noticed recently though that her venue on the programme has changed a bit? I wonder if this is the result of the producers actually looking at the final product to air?

Did this show ever air??? I seemed to have missed it or was she on only a portion of the show??
I've had the same result as cheese ob, those little pots at the super don't seem to ever grow but the ones at the garden centre are like on auto-pilot.

Great topic! It certainly ISN'T Market Kitchen. That's for sure.
Thinking through all the programs that I look forward to watching (my criterion) it's one of two things: a contest or some form or travel/foreign element.
Masterchef Goes Large, Hell's Kitchen, Top Chef, even the Come Dine With Me all kept my interest level high from beginning of show to end.
Any travel element, that's why I can still watch Floyd after 20 times.
So, perhaps a travel based show with some competitive elemts would be ideal for me. "Masterchef Goes Europe", maybe.

Then what are you saying, Conch? That 100% of the programming on UKTVFood is now repeats?
How cheap can they get?
"What's on UKTVFood" ia a bit of a rip-off isn't it? I'll have to check this MK Summer out.

livtoots, apologies as some of these perhaps are not the "heathiest" but they ARE some of my well-tested favourites:
Patatas bravas [link]
Fried olives [link]
Prawns in sherry [link]
Chorizos [link]
Albondigas [link]
Crab Croquettes [link]
Artichokes and Asparagus [link]
There's so many I could go on forever.....great for a party without the stuffy old "sit down at the dining table"
I always wondered why no one did this on the "Come Dine With Me" series?

I have induction hob and it works fine but I would prefer my gas one back. I just felt like I was more "in control" with the gas hob.
But I have to agree about gas burning...no matter how low the flame, no matter how heavy the pot [Le Creuset], even with a diffuser there would be scorching of thicker stews and sauces.
Gastro's suggestion of putting such dishes in the oven, while not ideal, is really the only workable solution when you have gas, IMHO.
Halogen? I don't know why they still make those. Dreadful.

I just love UKTVFood..I couldn't live without it I don't think! But I agree entirely that they seem to have lost the plot.
I still can't get over the cancellation of GFL, a complete tragedy. Insane.
But this "Gary Rhodes Insults India" is just absolutely over the top! What are they smoking??

Could I add one additional suggestion that would at least get this ONE viewer back: please, please talk to the cameras rather than to one another!
It's as if we (the TV audience) is merely eavesdropping on this show.
I think this one element of the programme contributes vastly to why so many people are commenting on how boring the program is. The audience is simply not engaged in what's going on, we're just observers. So, naturally, we fall asleep or change the channel.
With GFL, Jeni was always talking directly into the camera. It was as if we were "invited to the party!"

I would like to vote for Giada De Laurentiis' Italian cooking show. The receipes are fantastic. I've been inspired to make several of the dishes on her show and they are simple and very tasty.
It seems very different than the Italian food I'm familiar with. Is "Italian Amercian" very different from normal Italian cooking? Is it a genre onto itself? It seems wonderful whatever it is!

Alex
Have you tried filling the pot with water and just bring it to a rapid boil? Then gently run a sink brush around the edges. That has always worked a treat for me, especially when I've had a couple "leave the burner on" disasters!
In very tough circumstances one teaspoon of dishwashin powder (yes I know!) placed into the boiling water fix it up FAST!

Well, nothing has changed with this awful program. It looks like we'll just have to endure it until they cancel it from its own *dead* weight

I like to start a thread where we can have everyone's contribution on how the producers could make MK more watchable. I'm exasperated at this show. It's terrible in its current format.
Season 2 has turned out to be just more of the same.
My first suggestion: Eliminate the insipid "competitions" between host and guest chef. They're irritating, often create insipid dishes and add absolutely nothing. The poor "cafe guests" that have to taste the stuff...yuk.

I'm at my wits end after having watched last week's shows. Please, please UKTVFood, change this program.
I've started another thread where everyone who shares my opinion can make positive suggestions on what could be done to make this program more enjoyable.

I often have the channel on in the background to keep me company while I'm working and I perk up when there's anything on that's of interest.
But what I notice about MK when it is on that it's just a bunch of mumbling and lots of silent time where no one is even talking. Nothing really ever grabs your attention.
So if you were TRYING to watch it you'd have the same effect - overwhelming boredom. Snoresville is a perfect description.
I think the suggestion to lighten up is perfect. Add something please with a *little* spark of human interest.
This programme needs a major re-think.

I agree wholeheartedly with the posters on this thread: YES, Market Kitchen is the worst cookery programme ever.
As heyu said, it could do with less content and a lot more interaction. I also have to agree that watching Matthew Fort on the show - although I feel he is the best presenter by far - does diminsh his stature as a critic. I'll never quite feel the same about his writing after seeing him have a try his own hand at some of these dishes. He has also exposed some of his prejudices as a natural result of being overexposed on this show.
I'm also less inclined to shop at Waitrose now myself with them propping up this dire show.

ReedW it seems to me that they are deliberately picking weird and sometimes disgusting ingredients. Many of them are simply inaccessible in my area.
Why do they make this show so hard to watch?

I agree totally gluck. And Tana is the number one probelm with this show. Her piped in questions that often make no sense and the arms always flailing about. And what IS it about her and Matt T, they REALLY don't like one another, do they?
Sauvignon, it is only a matter of time before something is done to fix this programming debacle.
