Cheeky Hi, I'm a new girl. What a brilliant forum! Does anybody know what "sambal oelek" is ?(It may also be spelled "olek" I guess). I found the ingredient in a recipe on a Swedish website when I was looking up some new recipes for "lovbiff" (beef olives, well sort of but not). I think it may be quite spicy and possibly used indonesian cooking... Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated, esp. on where I can buy it here.

btw This web site is dangerous .. I've already copied a recipe for All Bran cake mmmm, gotta go shopping and get some ingredients... Smile

HELP! Okay, wrack your brains chaps... what can I feed my children who have limited culinary tastes for dinner? Our weekly tea times, which must be cooked food as they can only have packed lunches boringly and regularly consist of:
Sausages / veg - carrot & swede mash
Roast dinner - chicken, lamb or beef and veg & roasties
Toad in the hole and veg/baked beans
Pancakes with lemon and (dare I say it) "sugar"
Meatballs and spaghetti
Ham, peas and pasta
Various pastas with napoletana/amatriciana sauce
"Broken burgers" lean minced beef in gravy and mash/veg
Chicken dippers, alphabites & veg/baked beans for those uninspired moments....
and I'm struggling to think of anything else... my son refers to rice as "that funny white stuff". Any healthy advice/tips/recipes which are not too spicy and don't contain pineapple or fish would be greatly appreciated.
My son hates cheesy sauces, my daughter loves tomato based sauces... Eagerly awaiting response... btw we don't do chickpeas! They love fruit so puddings are not an issue. I try to keep it healthy (Thanks Jamie O).

Thanks Livewire for the Jamie O Link. sadly not many school dinner recipes though ... think we'll try the vegetable chow mein though.

Fudge's Mum: good idea on the childrens cookbook and getting them to help with the preparation, although I forgot to say that mine are aged 2 and 6.... My 6 year would enjoy helping.

Can anybody recommend any good Childrens cookery books? (Deep fried child with toddler toy crudites...) Develish

Hi

Does anybody please have a good recipe for bread machine Beer and Mustard bread? I had some of a friend's on a picnic recently, but she's cagey with her recipes, and I'd really like to make some myself - good for sausages sarnies.

OK , I know I'm a sad case, I've been reading the packet ingredients contents of my bread mixes. It seems that every single one contains "chickpea flour". Why is this? What does chickpea flour do to the bread mix? Can't wait to find out so if anyone can shed any light on this, am eagerly awaiting to hear....[link]

Hi, please can anyone confirm roughly what temperature this should be? I was reading the savoury french cake recipe and want to try it. My oven is electric fan and quite fast ... any advice on what a "warm" oven temperature would be?

I'd welcome some advice on budget recipes for my family. We don't do fried food, chickpeas or anything too spicy though. Now there's a challenge!

My ma in law puts them in a green salad - just cooked, and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Delicious! I've used them in stir frys before too which worked well... Big Grin

Hmmm, interesting, thanks Tim. (I shall use it when I'm stuck for chat at a future dinner party!) I wonder why it isn't in ordinary shop bought bread then, or maybe it is and they don't tell us? Is it the only flour-type ingredient in Poppadums? Smile

Baked apples? French apple tart? Sell some? Apple sauce jars for all in Xmas stockings? I used to have an apple tree at my last house, I really miss it, oh how I envy you!Smile

What about a fragrant, chilled melon soup to start, followed by poached or grilled salmon steaks with a light olive oil and lime dressing, some mange tout, baby carrots and new potatoes, with summer pudding for dessert with some bio yoghurt to help digestion?

Hi

can anyone help me out with a recipe for a chicken and broccoli bake? It may be a cheesey type sauce. A friend cooked it for me a few years ago and it had chicken breasts, brocoli, maybe cauliflower and cheesey stuff... can't find it and can't remember what else was in it. It may have been a packet mix base (horror!) but it sure tasted scrumputious.... [link]

Woah, curry and baked beans, what a volatile combination!

Strangely enough, I bought some pork mince the other day a AND I bought a marrow yesterday with the very thought of stuffing it. Good idea re the tieing together with string - so simple but I hadn't thought if that one, duh me. I usually stuff my marrow in half pieces and cook them open. I often use corned beef, fried off with some softened onion chopped tomato and tomato puree and a few mixed herbs, sprinkled with grated cheese. Yum! Might do that for tea tonight........... Shall also check out the G srting tip Jennifer264.

A neighbour tipped my off that our local butcher sells ham ends off really cheap too, good for soup or putting in a pasta or rice dish. Off to the cauldron to toil and trouble....

I also want to make bramble stuff . I did an apple and blackberry crumble yesterday, but it was too much on the blackberry side, very strong flavour and all those seeds get stuck in your teeth!. I have been searching for a bramble JELLY recipe, my Nana used to make a lovely one, but she's departed so no recipe to follow... Along with Coffee girl, I also need tips[link]

Hi Starburst, I agree on the combined low fat, low cost AND healthy recipes book request. I have searched high and low and haven't found one, so I eagerly await any info from the forum. Maybe we should write one! There's obviously a big market for it.
