Ainsley Harriott
Flamboyant chef Ainsley Harriott has notched up fourteen series of Ready Steady Cook, alongside numerous primetime cookery series featuring his fresh, fun and accessible cuisine.
His career started at the age of 16 when Ainsley began training at Westminster College. He went on to become a junior trainee in West End restaurant Verrey's, where he graduated to commis chef, before moving to The Strand Palace.
Ainsley combined his early culinary career with show-business talents, probably inherited from his musician/actor father, Chester. He formed a musical duo, the Calypso Twins, with Paul Boross and released a record and performed on radio, TV and the London comedy circuit.
However cooking remained Ainsley's main passion, and he continued to work in professional kitchens, including The Dorchester, Brown's, The Hilton, The Westbury, New Bond Street, Café Peilican and Quaglino's.
In the early 1990's Ainsley was working as head chef of the Long Room at Lord's Cricket Ground, when BBC Radio asked him to present More Nosh, Less Dosh for BBC Radio 5. A call from BBC Pebble Mill soon followed and Ainsley moved on to become resident chef on BBC TV's Good Morning with Anne & Nick. This in turn led to Can't Cook, Won't Cook.
In 1997, Ainsley's first solo series Barbecue Bible took him around the world, sampling and cooking the very best open-air food. Ainsley's Meals in Minutes, Ainsley's Big Cook Out and Ainsley's Gourmet Express soon followed. Soon after this he became resident presenter on Ready, Steady, Cook. He also presented the one-off BBC show 50 Things to Eat Before You Die, where viewers nominated their favourite dishes of all-time.
Ainsley is a best-selling author, with many books to his name and more in the pipeline. He's sold over one and a half million books worldwide, from his first major international title, Barbecue Bible to his latest release The Feel-Good Cookbook.
The Feel-Good Cookbook book captures Ainsley's enthusiasm for making food fun. It's a reflection of his lifelong passion for food that began in his South London home with mum Peppy encouraging him to cook for family and friends. The book is made up of healthy, tasty and easy-to-prepare recipes, good for both body and soul.
