Every Day by Bill Granger

Everything from the lime green cover to the short and snappy writing style screams out young, fresh and simple, epitomising Bill Granger's philosophy towards food. As its title suggests, this book is packed full of quick, unfussy recipes to cook every day from a man who understands how people live today.

Bill takes you through his week in recipes, from healthy-living Monday (making up for a weekend of excesses) to lazy Sunday brunch via a Thursday night kitchen dinner party. He writes for people with busy lives, himself having three restaurants to run, and as many children to feed. This makes it a perfect book for mid-week suppers, and even has a section on quick and delicious pack lunches. Having a young family has also made Bill aware of the need to encourage a healthy attitude towards food in children. Lots of the recipes are ideal for families, and the book is illustrated with pictures of his cherubic daughters with bouncing blonde ringlets tucking in to the food.

Being a Sydney sweetheart, many of Bill's recipes have a Pacific Rim influence. This brings a freshness of flavours and ideas, especially for us living in the Northern hemisphere. With a reputation as the king of breakfasts, Bill does not disappoint on that score either. He could never be satisfied with toast and cereal, but rather whips up Apple, Dried Cherry and Almond Loaf; Berry Hotcakes with Maple Syrup; or Real Muesli Bars for breakfast on the run.

Later in the day the meals are uncomplicated with clean, strong flavours: Ricotta And Herb-Stuffed Roast Chicken; Coriander-Crumbed Lamb Cutlets with Herbed Yoghurt; or Caramel Salmon with Steamed Rice and Lime Wedges. The book is peppered with little tips, substitutes and suggestions as well as soundbites as to how the food fits into the author's life.

Bill claims 'Just like everyone else, I often find myself in the supermarket at 5pm, zoning out in front of all those shelves and thinking "What on earth am I going to make for dinner?"' This is a refreshingly human remark from a top chef; however I am not convinced it can be true as his book is full of quick, easy and innovative creations that seem to come to him effortlessly.
