Someone please pass the following information on to Matthew Fort: Carrots were originally purple or red, with a thin root. The species did not turn orange until the 1500's when Dutch agricultural scientists and growers used a mutant yellow carrot seed from North Africa to develop a carrot in the colour of the House of Orange, the Dutch Royal Family. In an attempt to "nationalize" the country's favourite vegetable they began experiments on improving the pale yellow versions by cross breeding them with red varieties. These varieties contain beta carotene to produce orange-coloured roots This was developed to become the dominant species across the world - wonderful, sweet orange.

How come if I'm composing a message on this board, it's telling me I'm spelling words wrong like colour and favourite, but not if I spell them color and favorite? I thought this was the UK..... oh look it's in the title uktvfood. Whoever runs the message boards must think it's usatvfood.

Why does nobody peel potatoes any more? It seems as if all the chefs/cooks went into a huddle one day and decided en mass that they weren't gonna peel no more Confused. I'm sorry but if you set down unpeeled spuds on my plate, I'm gonna spend the next 20 mins peeling. Potato skins just don't do it for me, you get the lovely soft spud and this leathery thing wrapped around it or even through it (I watched one chef mash with skins, YUK!) Confused
