In your write up you state 'Originally starring Brian Wilde as determined ex-Army man Foggy'. Surely Michael Bates as Cyril Blamire appeared in the original series. Or have I missed something. I have series 1, 2, 3 & 4 on dvd and Foggy does not appear until series 3 'The Man from Owestry'.

Haggis et al

What happened to series 7,8,9,10,.....16?

Does anyone know what Compo had in his matchbox (official version)?

Where is Brian Wilde these days? Is he still with us?

Sorry to hear about 'Foggy'. I obviously missed the announcement/obituary. I have just read Peter Sallis' autobiography, 'Fading into the Limelight' published in 2006 and in the ONLY chapter on LOTSW he says 'Foggy' was still with us. That's what prompted me to ask. Cry

All the best.

Good to know Brian Wilde is still alive.
Maggio, showing my ignorance a bit, what is the IMDB? Ah - just looked it up in Wikipedia. Is it the IMDb (Internet Movie Database)?
As for Cleggy not looking too good - well, he is 86 this year and has failing eyesight. So I suppose he could be considered to be looking pretty good!!

Hi itschad
THE FLAG AND ITS SNAGS, THE FLAG AND ITS FURTHER SNAGS & HERE WE GO INTO THE THE WILD BLUE YONDER have been on recently but I'm not sure if they were on UKTV Drama or Gold. Haven't seen HERE WE GO AGAIN INTO THE WILD BLUE YONDER or GETTING SAM HOME recently. Then again, since I retired I've turned into Howard! I was probably cleaning windows when they were on. Anybody know a Marina!?? Wink

Thanks for the info BigUnc. I tend to agree with your last paragraph. I suppose it must happen somewhen, but thanks to the wonders of technology and people like us LOTSW will go on forever!

Aaah Haaa! So the famous Eccles & Minnie Bannister are a couple eh. Wait 'till I tell Henry Crun. Develish

Now then, Gnomeandaway & Snowball2 - I tend to agree with both of you to some extent (being a devout coward). Remember Roy Clarke is ageing as well and it must be difficult to keep coming up with new scripts.
I think Peter & Frank are beginning to show their age now and I think it is a bit selfish of us to expect them to go on forever and retain the same ability to make us laugh. Do not forget Peter also has failing eyesight. I hear they are making another Wallace & Grommit tv show. Is Peter doing the voice of Wallace in that as well? If so, he deserves a medal!
Let’s be thankful they are still with us. I guess the famouseccles would agree with me that it would be nice to have Spike, Harry & Peter still with us and Spike still writing the Goon Show scripts but… Dads Army is another of my favourites. And Elvis... Need I say more?
‘The moving finger writes; and having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.

They are at it again those UKTV Drama people. On their home page ‘Peter Sallis profile’ they state:
‘…he didn't start to make a name for himself until after WWII (in which he served as RAF pilot).’
According to his autobiography, ‘Fading into the limelight’, Peter actually served as a Radio Telephony Instructor at Cranwell. He volunteered as a Navigator but was told he had failed the medical due to ‘…albumen in your water’ and was likely to blackout flying at 10,000ft. I think this may be a misunderstanding by Peter as albumen is the white of egg. Albumin is probably what he was told. Albumin is essential for maintaining the osmotic pressure needed for proper distribution of body fluids between intravascular compartments and body tissues. Tongue
He does say later in the book that he has happily flown at and above 10,000ft with no ill effects (but not as a pilot).

I suppose it could have been Albumen…he is a good egg! Big Grin

Famouseccles - Thanks for reminding me. Just the thought of it made me laugh. I must get my GS tapes onto cd soon. Smile

Big Unc - Who you callin' an unadulterated idiot. Let me tell you - I'm an adulterated idiot and I got the paper to prove it see. I'm not a complete idiot. I've been diluted. Big Grin

Hi Big Unc
I know you were/are in LOTSW mode but I was in The Goons mode at the time of writing. I’m sure the famouseccles understood.
You are right about Cleggs appreciation of idiots of course, although I can't quote anything off the top of my head this time of night. (It's called old age!)
According to my (English Cheeky )) dictionaries of synonyms:
Dilute v – ADULTERATE, cut, make thinner, thin (out), water down, and weaken. Plus many more such as contaminate, debase, attenuate, depreciate etc.
Unadulterated adj – UNDILUTED, pure, whole, unmixed, genuine, real, full.

I am about to pour a glass of Laphroaig from Islay. It will be unadulterated i.e the glass will be full & the whiskey undiluted (even with highland spring water). Here's to ye!
Keep sending it down!!

Hi Itschad, glad to be of help. I read Bill's book several years ago but can't remember much about it now so hope to get hold of it again. It is available from Amazon I know. I met many 'famous' people in my working life at one of the worlds busiest airports but unfortunately not many that mattered to me.
I've read Peter's book as well and was a little disappointed that after 34+ years of LOTSW he only managed 1 relatively short chapter on the subject. I would have thought he could have written a whole book on it! Still, a good read none the less.
All the best.

Listening to the local radio the other day I heard a discussion between the presenter and a member of the public, a ‘caller’, which rang a bell. They were discussing the finer points & techniques of BICYCLE POLO!
Now, I’m sure you all remember 23rd Sept. 1990 and an episode called ‘Walking Stiff Can Make You Famous’ where Foggy is going to bring polo to the masses using bicycles. (Blimey! I’ve turned into Big Unc! Cheeky ) Well he was too late by 89 years according to the chap on the radio. Bicycle polo started up in 1901 & the International Bicycle Polo Federation was formed in 1996. There are 4 members in a team not 3 as Foggy had.
Just thought I’d mention it…
Wonder if Roy Clarke new about it.

All the best

And so say all of us Ye Haggis. But don't be too hard on Lucifer. He is quite right. Of all the classic shows on UKTV Drama, LOSW is the best. Try to persuade him to watch the later series as well.

Anybody know if or when the last series is going to be repeated. I've got all of them on DVD but missed the first episode with, I believe, Eric Sykes. I don't mean Eric missed it as well. Although he may have done. I mean he was in it.

Grumpy Uncle - Sorry I can't help with any other titles for LOTSW books but could you let me have the ISBN numbers of the ones you have. I did read one many, many years ago that I borrowed from the local library but the title etc. eludes me. A lot of water has passed under the old bridge since then.
Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks Grumpy. I get an e-mail saying there is a new posting and I click on the link. That takes me directly to this message board so I never considered clicking on the 'message boards' link and therefore never saw the 'Jump to most recent post' option. You have saved my clicking finger many cycles. Smile

Many thanks
