Monty Python - Beyond the Grail
What happened when the circus left town and the Monty Python troupe disbanded? Read on for some post-Python trivia - just don't expect the Spanish inquisition.
John Cleese
Immediately after he left the Python TV series, Cleese set up Video Arts Ltd. Although the name might not be familiar, they are one of the world's most successful corporate video producers. Cleese wrote, directed and starred in dozens of their wacky training films. Subjects range from customer service to business finance and employee appraisals.
Eric Idle
"What do I NOT miss about Britain? Answering questions about Monty Python like nothing happened for 16 years," Eric Idle once quipped. Like his comedy
cohorts, Idle decamped to the US after Python. He starred in several films, and wrote the theme tune for One Foot in the Grave. Turning his talents to novels, his most recent dealt with comedians in the 22nd century.
Michael Palin
The 'quiet Python' continued on a comic tip with the sitcom Ripping Yarns, in 1977. However, he's now best known for travel shows such as the Phileas Fogg-inspired Around the World in 80 Days. Michael attributes his travelogue work to a childhood love of cycling in the Yorkshire countryside.
Graham Chapman
"Graham insists on remaining dead, which is really selfish of him," commented Eric Idle some years after Chapman's death from cancer in 1989.
After Monty Python, Graham faded from the limelight, battling alcoholism for a time. He spent his latter years lecturing in the US, but also enjoyed success with his pirate film, Yellowbeard.
Terry Jones
The jocular, Welsh Python landed firmly on his feet after the show. Having already directed all the Python films, Jones continued behind the camera with Wind in the Willows and Personal Services. He also wrote children's books and, like Michael Palin, is now a broadcaster. He is known for using his love of history to bring humour to classic literature.
Terry Gilliam
"I'm the luckiest (Python) because I'm the least known," Gilliam once remarked. With his illustrious post-Python career in movie-making, that soon changed. Having been responsible for the subversive Python animation, Gilliam continued with dark fantasies Jabberwocky and Brazil. Filming the latter was so arduous that he suffered a temporary, stress-related paralysis in his legs.
