Gallery: James May's 20th Century The high point of the series for James – and us – has to be the episode where he gets to fly in the RAF's latest supersonic fighter, the Typhoon. This beast of a plane can reach Mach 2 at 65,000 feet. The aircraft is built from carbon fibre composites and specially developed light alloys. James, who is an amateur pilot, described the trip as "the best thing I have ever experienced… It's life-changing, frankly." Here, a Typhoon from 11 Squadron is pictured on August 17, 2007, shadowing a Russian Bear-H aircraft over the North Atlantic Ocean.
