Polar Pics: When things go wrong At or below minus 15 degrees centigrade, blood vessels close to the skin start to narrow in order to preserve core body temperature. In extreme cold or protracted periods of exposure to the elements, blood flow can reduce to dangerously low levels and cause tissue injury (frostbite).
