Avebury

Avebury

About 5,000 years ago, work began on what is now one of Britain's most important pre-historic sites. With the help of oxen, Ancient Britons dragged stones two or three kilometres to the site at Avebury, but its actual purpose is still a mystery.

I have visited Avebury a couple of times and am still awe struck by the place. I think it is more impressive than Stonehenge! It is a stone circle on a huge scale, the stones of Avebury are giants and they are not fenced off! It is a site you can get close to and walk around the stones.

I adore Avebury and visit whenever I can. The stones are magnificent and one of the best historic circles which you can still wander around. Up on the ridge, there are 4 beech trees with all their roots exposed, simply stunning and well worth walking to. On my first visit, I had a real sense of my ancestry, it really hit me just how unlikely it is for me as an individual to exist. Those who built the circle quite may have existed, in part, in order for me (and possibly you) to exist now. Obviously, this is my cultural perspective but the circle is magnificent in its own right and should be enjoyed, respected and protected by everyone who has an interest in the historic roots of Britain.

I must admit it was pretty interesting. We drove past stonehenge but didn't go in, due to the ridiculous overpriced entry charges. Having read about Avebury in a book, I think it beats Stonehenge hands down.

I hate to spoil everybodys enthusiasm for Avebury, do feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the stones (or at least some of them) re-erected within the last 100 years or so by some local archeologist ? Move them today and you'll find concrete underneath. So the impression that the stones have been standing for Millenia is slightly inaccurate. Its still a bizarre place to be, an inspiring place to be and it is well worth a visit, but it is not quite what it seems at first sight.

Avebury is an amazingly complex and beautiful site. It is hard to imagine just how the people who built it managed to achieve such a place. The henge alone is awe-inspiring when you think that they dug it with antler pics!
The Great Raymondo - Some of the stones were re-erected in the 1930's but that is no different to Stonehenge which also had some stones re-erected at the start of the last century.
