  Step 1: Walls

  Begin by painting the walls taupe, which will warm the scheme. Here, a coordinating metallic-patterned wallpaper reflects light and brightens up the alcove.

  Now add texture with rugs. A large sisal rug fills the main space, while a smaller black and white rug makes an eye-catching feature in front of the bed.

  For a luxurious look, use a heavily woven fabric for the curtains, which won’t need lining, combined with voile panels instead of traditional nets.

  Step 4: Furniture

  Use a mix of dark wood and unfinished reclaimed teak for an eclectic feel. The deep tones of the wood stop the colour scheme looking too bland.
