Tiling an old table or tired worktop surface is a great way to give them a new lease on life. Use standard tiles or mosaic tiles. Mosaic tiles are usually sold in sheets with a paper or material backing so that the tiles are evenly spaced and easy to apply. Don't worry if the surface is already tiled as this makes one of the best surfaces for new tiles.
Time to complete job: Two hours.
Approximate budget: From £12 per square metre of tile.
First Steps
Calculate how many tiles you will need by measuring the length and width of the area and multiplying these two figures together to give the area to be tiled. Now divide this figure by the area of a single tile to find the number of tiles you need. Allow an extra 10 percent for wastage.
For more information see the Tile Association.

Step 1: Preparing the surface
Place the tiles on the surface to check the best way of laying them out - avoid cutting tiles if you can.
Prepare the worktop or table by washing with soapy water to get rid of any dirt and grease. -

Step 2: Applying the adhesive
Spread adhesive/grout over about half a square metre (about half a square yard), starting in one corner.
Use the notched side of the spreader to form ribbons of adhesive to an even depth. -

Step 3: Tiling
Lay down the first individual tile or sheet of mosaic tiles, pressing gently onto the adhesive.
Work along the surface until you have laid as many whole tiles or sheets of mosaic as possible.
Tip: If you are using individual tiles, add plastic spacers at each tile corner. -

Step 4: Fitting the tiles
Cut the remaining tiles to fit in the space along the rear edge of the worktop or edge of a table. Score the glazed surface of the tile where it must be broken - a tile cutting jig is the easiest way of making straight cuts.
To make shaped cuts around pipes etc, use a saw tile. -

Step 5: Grouting and sealing
When all the tiles are fixed, wipe off the excess adhesive and leave to dry.
Use a squeegee to force more adhesive or grout into the gaps between the tiles and wipe over with a damp sponge.
When the grout has dried, clean the surface with a soft cloth to polish the tiles.
Tip: On worktops, make a flexible waterproof seal between the new tiles and the worktop by running a bead of waterproof clear or white sealant around the bottom edge of the tiles.
