Weeds are one of the major problems faced by gardeners. If not controlled properly, newly planted areas can soon become a morass of green weeds which can seriously weaken new plants or reduce your crop of vegetables.

Weed seeds in the soil can remain viable for many years and some need literally only a flash of daylight to start them growing, so read on for advice on how to control them.

Tip: Annual weeds multiply quickly - they germinate, set many seeds and die within a year. Perennial weeds cause problems in different ways - their roots are long lived so can be difficult to control. Find out the type of weeds you're dealing with before tackling them.
