How to build decking: part 1 - setting out the area

Building and laying decking is a fantastic way to create a whole new look for your garden. In this first of our three in-depth video how to guides, DIY expert Craig Phillips demonstrates how to set out the area in your garden in preparation for building the frame for your decking.

Tools you’ll need

Tape measure
String line
Hammer
Pegs
Anchor bolts
Galvanized screws
Stakes
Spirit level
Ratchet set
Galvanised angle brackets
Decking
Treated timber
Power tools – chop saw

Step 1: Measure and mark the decing area

Measure the length and width of your required area. You can use a string line to help take an accurate measurement. Use stakes as corner markers to keep the string line square and symmetrical to the building.
Step 2: Distinguish height and level of decking boards

Make the decking flush to your inside flooring. Use joists sitting on beams bolted to the wall - the ledger - and posts supporting the other end.
